Wonder if this was why this is a 1.10.1.0 version and not 1.10.0.35.

Grids up, download pages are up. Linux Alpha not available yet. No word if it will be.

Why do some people seem suprised its 1.10.1 not 1.10.0.something?
It clearly said they would update to 1.10.1 in the announcement

It doesn't follow the norms of software release management.

MAJOR.MINOR.TEENY.PATCH (I prefer to leave the TEENY out mind you).

Anyway, in software dev you would normally increment the PATCH for bug fixes and stuff, things that don't exacly add any new features. MINOR would get incremented for features that are added that don't actually break compatibility with anything, and MAJOR would get incremented in the event that you are breaking compatibility with previous versions. In a well done release environment, the version change alone should tell you something useful about what to expect from the software. In the LL case, the MAJOR seems to be pretty much a worthless number and with the MINOR signifying incompatible changes to the system, and TEENY signifying what should be in theory compatible feature additions. i.e. scripts shouldn't break and stuff, but something new was added. PATCH appears to continue meaning mostly the same thing.

From the release notes we are given .. the only real new "feature" is supporting mozilla, which is easily argued to be a bug fix and not a feature. So the jump from 1.10.0 to 1.10.1 is .. odd. Unless the dropping of the Linux client was a significant reason for the change. The release notes don't give a good argument IMHO for the TEENY change.

At the same time, most software dev release versions are driven more by marketing then it is by dev. How much real authority dev has to keep that sort of thing in-line more or less acts as an indicator of what to expect. If dev actually controls their release management, or if marketing/biz control it and dev is constantly plagued with whatever gets thrown at them. Software quality tends to be much greater if it is primarily under devs control, but biz/marketing are a bit power hungry ;)

Same deal. Just asked Harry Linden in-world, who said "I'm checking.... Best thing to do is check later on the downloads or linux forums page."

I know its not following a normal release schedule, but people seem suprised to see 1.10.1, while it is odd it is 1.10.1 its nota suprise the new version is 1.10.1 as it is what they announced.

Anyway.. lets hope there will be a linux version soon, else I'll quit.

And the Wine version runs worse too here

All the rendering problems I had with the Windows client under wine are magnified in the new version.

My face comes out orange and male (with a beard!), my torso is bright orange, and skirts always reach the floor.

At least with the last version it was possible to get rid of them by going into "edit appearance" and changing nothing.

ugh.

It strikes me that linux users are some of the brightest on the planet.

Linux is the primary platform for hackers to go about their business is it not.

Now the way I see what could happen here is:

1). Lindens Fix the so called - alpha client - so it is at least in line with the current win version

2). Lindens release the code for linux alpha to the linux community can fix it for them.

3). The users of the worlds primary platform of choice for uber-g33ks and hackers unite in order to bring about the, shall we say ..... inconvienience at the least to a well known virtual world.

Just my idle musings??? Hmmmmm food for thought.

Lol .. in my experience, the average Linux user is just a vocal fanatic who might have some passing skills at Perl. Oddly, they are also the ones doing the least amount of coding, as Paul would say. They don't tend to care if the source is actually open or not, they just want someone ELSE to fix it for them. If not the Linden's, then they want someone ELSE in the OpenSource community to do it.

Major,

Without looking at hte underlying technologies and architecture of SL I cannot say whether or not I possess the skills (of which their are many from many disciplines, might I add).

I am not trying to stir up a hornets nest here, I am however attempting to achieve some level of recognition....not for me but for all of us, we are being neglected here.

I want what we all want - SL for linux - and I dont care how we get it.
