Need details: Ubuntu version, processor, ram, hd, graphics, internet, etc. Also, are you running Ubuntu or Kubuntu (the KDE variant)?
One suggestion is the possibility that the SL client program is corrupted and needs to be reinstalled. Also, something in the ~/.secondlife folder could be hosed. Rename that folder (by adding a date or something to it before the dot) and restart SL. if you do that, you'll need to set up your preferences again, as well as putting in your Avatar name and password. This will not affect ownerships, inventory, etc.

Same problem here. I use Ubuntu 7.04 32 Bit (not Kubuntu) on a AMD64 3,8 Ghz, 1 GB RAM, Nvidia 6600. DSL 16 Mbit down / 1 Mbit up
The problem comes only at the 1. start of SL after booting Ubuntu. It doesnt matter if I start it directly after the boot or if I wait a while. After killing the process and a new start of the client it works well until the next boot. A new download of the client and reinstalling does not solve it.

I had similar (but worse) problems when I had an ATI card. Since replacing that with an NVIDIA 7300GT, it has been working great. Since that's happening with an NVIDIA (you don't say how much RAM is on it), I can suggest a couple of things:
1. Check to see if the RAM in the graphics card matches the setting in the client preferences.
2. Open Adept and go over the list of packages SL says needs to be installed in order for the client to work properly. Pay careful attention to the version numbers and make sure they match the requirements of SL. Install any that are missing.
3. Look at your firewall(s) to see if there isn't something there blocking the SL protocols. A recent upgrade of packages can cause settings to be altered in such a way as to block ports and protocols.
4. Look at your DSL modem/router settings and make sure there isn't a firewall running that could be blocking the service. If you are using an Actiontec DSL modem, you need to know there are multiple bugs in it. The firewalls they put in those things are complete crap and must be disabled.
Hope this helps.

After a bit of research I found that SCIM migth have been involved. Disabling SCIM let me run SL fine, again. Hope it helps. ciao

Did you try starting SL from a commandprompt window yet? The text output you'd get might help to figure out why the client does what it does ^_^
