Lo folks,

Just tried SL on Mandriva Linux will a total lack of anything good :(

This is Mandriva Linux 2006 Powerpack (comes with all needed proprietaty drivers) and is using kernel 2.6.12-12mdk i686.

I have included the output below of what I get when I run ./secondlife

Just so you know I am using Gnome 2.10, I extracted it with file-roller and I placed it at /usr/lib/secondlife/ and when I ran it, I ran it as a normal user (although I get the same message as root too).

{code}
[cyorxamp@unit1 secondlife]$ ./secondlife

2006-08-04T22:44:35Z This can be because you somehow have multiple copies running, or your system incorrectly thinks a file is open. If this message persists, restart your computer and try again. If it continues to persist, you may need to completely uninstall Second Life and reinstall it.
[/code]

Naturally I am not running two copies at the same time :P

Any ideas most appreciated.

My guess is you extracted the archive as a different user than you are trying to run SL with.

SL needs read and write access to it's installation point.

A quick fix would be:
1> become root
2> run:
chown -R cyorxamp.cyorxamp /usr/lib/secondlife/
3> exit from root and try again.

(edited a couple of times to be more specific based on your post)

Actually, we don't know. A great variety of people ask questions here, with different levels of expertise. In fact, I recall several threads where the poster did start using Linux the day before, literally.

As for your question, I'm not sure, but a search of the forum for "multiple running copies" seems to indicate that your problem is the ole' missing directories issue. If you untar the archive with a graphical file-roller, it doesn't extract empty directories, which SL needs to create files in. So, untar from the command line instead.

If you untarred from the command line, then I dunno.
