Problems/minor issues I've seen w/Ubuntu

Hello all

Well I'm running SL now using the Lin Alpha Client. I've noticed some small problems with it but nothing that really has had me up in arms enough to get off my fuzzy rump and do much of anything. However I figure I'll post my observations here and see if anything is new to anyone.

First my system specs:
Flavor: Ubuntu (xcfe aka Xubuntu settings) - Latest version, updated regularly
Ram: 1 gig
CPU: AMD Sempron 2400+
Video: GeForce2 GTS/Pro
Audio: Creative Labs SB Audigy (rev 03)

Issue 1: No sound. No sound at all. Dunno what I need to set, so I just turn sound off in the program.

Issue 2: Taking an in-program screenshot causes the program to crash.

Issue 3: Upload menu options under File does nothing. I select upload picture, bulk what ever and nothing happens, no windows, no change in the program nothing. Is there a way to upload images w/o using the client?

1) Is sound using OSS or an ALSA-OSS wrapper, or sound server?
2) You must make a sym link (ln -s) from secondlife/lib to the libjpeg.so.blah of your system to fix this
3) File upload is not implemented yet.

Are you running Ubuntu Dapper Drake or Edgy Eft? Edgy Eft is still alpha and pre-release testing and is broken nearly every other day, so it is hard to pinpoint issues. Dapper Drake should run things smoothly. Be sure you can play sound from two sources at once, sometimes programs take over the sound card and doesn't share. SL sound is rather primitive now, so when running the client in the terminal you should see:

2006-09-01T08:04:06Z INFO: LLAudioEngine_FMOD::init() initializing FMOD
2006-09-01T08:04:06Z INFO: Audio output: OSS
2006-09-01T08:04:06Z INFO: LLAudioEngine_FMOD::init() FMOD initialized correctly

That comes up and stays on terminal until you enter your user name/password in the client and hit connect. FMOD and OSS are not really the best things to use so they may not work wonderfully, but that's just my two cents! OSS is defunct and often not included in the kernel anymore, you may need the wrapper.

Hi there! These two should be fixed in linux client release 1.12.0.51742 (which was released just a few days ago), so please make sure you're using the latest version.

I am running Dapper.

Also if File upload isn't implimented is there a way to upload w/o using the client? Over the website somewhere? It would really be helpful for those of us who use linux.
