Like many of us I d/l'd the windows viewer for the handful of days the Linux on could not work.

Aside from nice things like sounds, what blew me away is how much better the windows client running under wine did at rendering scenes.

The win versions quickly rendered high quality textures on locations where the linux client (even the 1.9) renders coloured blobs, with the texture occationally loading clearly before being blurred out again.

This is on the same computer with the same gfx card and OGL drivers.

Is it possible to fix these odd behaviors in the linux client with settings changes or do we have to wait for it to mature?

Thanks

I have the same thing.

Also, SL Linux does not keep it´s cache between starts, and is not recognizing video memory or main memory, so the cache algorithm ends up permamnetly clearing cache :p

Windows / wine DOES load textures fully, and steadily.

SL Linux seems to try to do that, and VERY quickly, with HUGE bandwidth used, but I think partly because of the cache algorithm above, it stays (or gets) blurry.

That is for me one of the first things LL could attack, now that alpha cahnnels seem to be OK: recognition of graphic and system memory, so that the cache algorith works properly.

Just to add, make sure you have set your graphics card memory by hand in settings.ini (/263/9c/86253/1.html)

The windows/wine client has problems with downloading textures quickly. Sometimes a texture does not appear at all, or it takes several minutes to rez. The Linux client almost immediately renders a preview of everything around, blurry but you can at least see, what's around you. And pointing your cursor at a surface will quickly sharpen it. If I am to choose between the two (albeit both wrong) behaviours, I certainly go for the Linux behaviour.

Still, the memory detection needs to be fixed, no doubt about that.

Zi, so right! :D

Being in Europe, I often get ONE router on the way to SL that has bad packets, and with bandwidth rates of up to 1500 kbps that Linux is very happy to use, I often see bad packets indicated in SL. :p

However, Zi, exactly that: the first view I get of a new area in SL Linux is there SO much faster than in wine/windows, that I really DO prefer the way the SL Linux client does it.

I think the blurriness will really only go away, when the SL Linux client recognises system and graphics memory properly, so that the cache is not permanently trying to empty itself, to make sure we don't "run out of system memory" .

On a side note I copied my settings.ini from the win/wine setup to the native client and besides thinkingI have 158 megs of video ram it seems to render better/faster. not as good as the win client but better than stock linux settings.
