1st i would like to congratulate, and thank you, for the linux client ! obviously, word will spread quickly of this great news...my question is just how quickly does linden labs want the linux masses to jump on this ? in other words, do you mind if we post the download page url to other forums (gentoo, wine, slashdot [!]) ? i will abide by your wishes . if you are ok with rapid adoption, a bittorent link on the download page might ease your bandwidth burden a bit . thanks again - michel

Personally i wouldnt just yet, just because its an alpha, bringing in new users to an unstable client may prove difficult, especially as they wouldnt know what the working behaviour is compared to a bug, I think all linux users in sl should definately be made aware of it though

Gee, I don't know, kinda a toughy. I know if if was a company looking deperately to go big time, I'd probably target Linux in order to capture 1% of the potential market that I already have. Also as the modal Linux user has the tools, time, and inclination to reverse engineer the SL protocol, I can't think of a single reason why they should be at all concerned about publicization within the most well connected group of geeks (in the groovy sense of the word) in the world.

I'll be way surprised if the alpha isn't slashdottted by morning regardless of what anyone does.

Google already knows about it. I found it in about 10 seconds once I was aware of it's existance.

Oops, perhaps I should have read this thread before posting an announcement on the MMORPG.org forums? :(

Ouch. Well, I gave no links, since they aren't "public", to the best of my knowledge. But the cat is definitely out of the bag now, the purpose was just to raise awareness...

I'll be refraining from posting on several forums where I do also participate until there is an official reply from LL on their policy. Still, I think that the sooner they officially release the alpha client, even with triple disclaimers, and lots of blinking, red tags saying Warning! This is Alpha Software! It may break your SL experience! We cannot guarantee anything if you use this client! Caveat utilitor — I guess that the Linux community, accustomed over a decade to half-working applications, will be more than tolerant — happily accepting what works and dismissing what doesn't, and still enjoy the experience...

As for having Linux hackers cracking the client... or the protocol... ah well... if they were so afraid of that, I guess LL shouldn't have released the Linux client on the first place :)

Yes, maybe people would come, download the client (IF they can open the website, that is), only to find out that 'cannot connect to server - service is down' :-((

Second time down in 2 days :-(

Gah, good timing for me being busy again I suppose.

But from my own hard-fought experience, datacenters that experience any shutdown after a long period of uptime will 'sudden death' some of the hardware. In particular if it was on the verge of going (but not yet flagging enough to alert people). Its worse in their case because the original problem was sudden and not planned.

Give it a little more time, it'll be 'stable' again. :)
