i have had this problem since LL has been making a linux client for the preview grid. when i attempt to log in to the preview grid, doing everything correctly mind you, the client just sits there for a long time then times out. i do not have anything on that could be blocking the connection. when i boot into windows i can get into the preview grid just fine but windows sucks so much i can barely type or move around with all the graphics settings all the way down. in linux i can get in the main grid just fine and have all the graphics settings all the way up with my framerate around 20 in the Welcome Area.

Try without sound or try one of the sound debugging variables inside the secondlife script.
