Any reason why the Linux version of SL would not work with Ubuntu? The hardware is a PS3. I installed the SL Client for Linux but when I run ./secondlife, nothing happens! Why?

This might be a silly question, but...

...is that the ia32 Linux client downloaded from LindenLabs, or one 3rd-party compiled for the PowerPC architecture of the PS3?
Also, PS3 Linux would have to be using MESA drivers for 3D which means totally accelerated (Sony has locked up the hardware acceleration where Linux can't get to it).

SL under PS3 is a good idea, I wonder how much time it will take to Sony to realize the benefits of opening PS3's reality engine.

Ruben

Ruben Considering that there are no games worth buying for PS3 (especially if you own a 360 as well) then that's the only use for it. I literally bought a PS3 for $1 on craigslist today because it had a broken blu-ray drive. I called and he said "it's not even worth the shipping cost to send it to sony"... sadly enough he's pretty right.

Ruben sony is historically known to reject any unlicensed development, they dont want you to make any games for it (eventho someone has to sometime during its lifespan)

SL would also compete with @home
08-23-2007 01:17
I really don't think Sony would want SL anywhere near their @home service! Particularly with the creative freedom that SL offers compared to the rather limited walled-garden that @home seems to be set up as. PS3 Linux is, depending on who you ask, a tax dodge, a conceit to IBM for getting cheap CELL units out for hackers to play with (which is a fine thing in itself), or buzz-word riding. Sony does not have a strong reputation for supporting the technology of others' when they can supply a limited equivalent and lock customers in to their world-view :-9 There are a lot of cool things you can do with a PS3, but -- sadly -- playing SL will likely not be one of them any time soon. And I wouldn't hold my breath for an X-box version either Unless you are practising for an unassisted dive record ;-P

I got a PS3 for Xmas and the only thing I mainly use it for is playing blue-ray movies. It would be neat to play SL on it...

There's a few problems on getting the PS3 to run SecondLife:
Small RAM (256 megs!) NVidia based acceleration is locked out to Linux in the PS3 Hypervisor (aka you're in a sandbox)
Now, there's ways around the former, but the latter's a killer. MesaGL will need to be built to use the Cell's multiple processors to speed up rendering each frame.
