I am looking for contributors to help launch our new Buddhists of SL newsletter. Stories, photographs, essays, articles, and anything else interesting and relevant to the Buddhist population within Second Life.

If interested, please contact me.

Well, the first main topic should probably be something on how Buddhism fits into SL. I'm beginning to see a very definite use for SL, but it can easily go either way. SL fuels the "gimme, wants, and do-for-me's," and it takes a bit of discipline not to fall into that. I've certainly done my share, but I'm much more aware of it these days.

It isn't really practical to use SL for meditation, which is the bulk of a Buddhist's practice. But there is also community -- helping others, teaching Dharma, and sharing information. I'm sure there are more ways Buddhists can' utilize it while keeping the precepts in mind -- particularly that of Right Livelihood.

Does that give you any ideas?

Basically, there are really no details for writers to know about ahead of time. If you have an article, or would like to write an article, that relates to both Buddhism and Second Life, than just submit it to me. When I collect enough, I'll publish it. :p

I don't really want to have any "rules," per se, for our newsletter yet. It should just be a conglomeration of submissions by our members. The ONLY restriction is that it be of relevance, however the writer sees it, to Buddhism and SL.

Having said that, please everyone, go to it! Dig into your online awareness and let us see SL through your eyes. Let your creativity flow, remember the precepts, stay mindful, and let's see what we come up with. Doing it this way will allow our newsletter to evolve in the same manner that the members of the Buddhists of SL evolve, and THAT is really the experiment here!

Newsletter

Hi everyone - I am very new to all this, so I'm not sure I have much in the way of content to offer, at least yet. I was thinking perhaps of drawing from a source like 'How to Practice: The Way to a Meaningful Life' (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0743427084/ref=wl_it_dp/002-0642637-6493656?%5Fencoding=UTF8&colid=2QTTF3OW4QK6V&coliid=IF7AO39RKTOCP&v=glance&n=283155) and then offering some short commentary on the passage. My only concern is if there is any problem re-publishing excerpts in a newsletter.

Also, it might be useful if we could have a meeting in SL on this, as perhaps a sort of quick brainstorming session...? Sometimes when people get together live, the ideas start flowing more!

thanks,
Arturius

Hi Sophia,

I have a meditation group which I will spending some time on early in the new year to get it off the ground. As long as you can find an area in the same room as the PC to meditate and have speakers or a headset I don't see why an audio stream would not work to provide tuition to those new to meditation. If anyone has ideas or would like to join the group please drop me an IM or just join the group :)

With regard to the newsletter , would you be interested in the activities at Supportforhealing which are based on dharma priciples but presented in a non-denominational way?

Elizabetha,

If you are interested in the relationship betwen Science and Buddhism also check our 'Physics of the soul' by uantum physicist Dr Amit Goswami - an excellent book.

Also as an aside I am currently streaming the holy Sanghatasutra in 'Zafu's Retreat' on supportforhealing if anyone wants to come and listen.

Much love to all.

By "tuition," did you mean "instruction"? ;)

That sounds great, but the only problem with a meditation session while SL is on is the fact that you'll get disconnected after a certain period of time if you're not active. Also, IM's will cause a loud DING, which could be rather distracting. (If I misunderstood what you meant, please let me know.)

Certainly, but since it's a Buddhist newsletter, it doesn't necessarily have to be presented in a non-denominational way. Or were you referring to Buddhist denominations? Either way, I see no reason to change it for the newsletter. Feel free to submit it!

That sounds fine, as long as you get permission. I'm not yet very familiar with copyright issues as they pertain to private club newsletters, but I'll try to find out soon.

Certainly! We try to have meetings every so often in-world at different times to accommodate as many time zones as possible. I'm setting up a Frappr! map which will help us figure out the most auspicious times for meetings.
