This is neat :)

Has anyone ever tried it? Do you know how well they handle alpha transparencies? I'd love to get one of some of the stuff I've made :)

Hahah, that would indeed be cool :)

There's actually a company out of California, Gentle Giant (http://www.gentlegiantstudios.com/) that actually does make personal action figures. They scan in your (real life) body with this giant 3-d scanning machine and then fabricate a hand painted articulate action figure, complete with shrink wrap and everything. It costs a few thousand bucks though.

As for the Fabjectory, they do print their price lists: http://www.fabjectory.com/index.php/secondlife

$50-$100 depending on their size.

The colors aren't as vivid as I'd like them to be (yet), but this sure is neat.

Hey, Hal9k Andalso here, I'm the resident who has started the Fabjectory service.

Francis, alpha portions of textures are printed as white. If you want to get real technical they are printed with a clear binding agent that show as white because that is the color of the plaster.

I wrote an Avatar Preparation Guide that goes over some tips on how to work around alpha textures with clothes, etc. hint: flexiprim skirts are your friend.

Kris was obviously joking, we're doing our best to respect people's intellectual property and their rights and are more than anything else want to work with the community.

Torley: color reproduction is tough, if you're interested in something that really "pops" your best bet is to use large blocks of colors and to bump up the contrast of your items prior to the capture taking place.

If people are interested in having custom creations done (instead of avatars) we're happy to work with them as well. For items with a similar volume and size the prices will be roughly comparable.

If anyone has questions, please feel free to email me at: mike@fabjectory.com

Thanks!

Congratulations:) You made wired! :D

Incidentally, I was taking a closer look at the avatar reproductions - you can clearly see the facets from the triangle faces. Have you thought about using the normal information from the avatar mesh to "smooth out" the vertices so you can do a smoother surface?
