From: Darien Caldwell I guess you didn't hear that Senator John Edwards already had a campaign headquarters in SL. Missed that first by thisssss much! Actually, Sen. Edwards isn't official. That's just a rumour circulating around. Hillary Clinton and Ron Paul also have HQ's, but none are official. I can assure you, we're the first. http://secondchoices.wordpress.com/2007/05/13/exclusive-mike-gravel-officially-rocks-second-life/I have worked on a lot of the other HQ's inworld, they are not official.

From: Astrophysicist McCallister Mike Gravel is the man we need to get things straightened out in our country. Less than 25% of the SL player base comes from the USA. It isn't "our" country to everyone else. The vast majority of us, whether from the US or not, really don't care about politics in real life, let alone in Second Life. Broccoli

From: Meade Paravane You mean less than 30%. It's still "most of us do not come from the US", whatever way you want to look at it. Broccoli

From: Meade Paravane Wasn't saying that most people are from the US.. Granted, I was just trying to make the point to the OP that the US is not home to the vast majority of SL's players any more, and as such, something that is only relevant to US players (and the % of those that care) isn't quite such the major step as they thought. It's funny how so many people want to be "the first" of whatever to be in SL, like it actually makes a difference or anyone really cares. My guess is that after the US election (whenever that is) all the candidates sell off their land and disappear never to be seen here again. Broccoli

I can assure you that Gravel will not be moving out anytime soon, even after the elections. Our lease is signed 6 months past the campaign end, and election day, so that we can further the views propounded by the campaign, including the National Initiative for Democracy.

I understand. From his point of view, however, we're talking about a potential 30% of a population that's nearing 50k online at once and almost a half million logged in over the last week. That's a whole lot of people (many of which will never see this forum post and/or not really care about politics anyway). If you're not interested, just ignore him and he'll go away. Or he'll win and attack your country. edit: actually, I'd like to hear what Mike thinks about SL.. There's a number of issues that have come up that sorta seem to need a political edge to them and it'd be interesting to see what he could come up with for solutions. Age play, bots, camping, grief, etc, etc... LL (understandably) doesn't want to get into this mess but Mike has it as his chosen career..

That's a whole lot of people (many of which will never see this forum post and/or not really care about politics anyway). So what you're saying is that he's using SL as a cheap medium to try and reach people? Remember that only 40 people at a time can visit a region - assuming that's how much land you have - so the % is almost miniscule. From: Meade Paravane If you're not interested, just ignore him and he'll go away. Or he'll win and attack your country. Oh I'm interested alright, especially as to why a politician thinks that his presence here is going to benefit the SL community ... rather than just benefitting himself. I'll ignore the lame joke about invading the UK, I'm sure he wouldn't want his representative in SL (which you appear to be) making light out of invading other countries - even if that is part of US foreign policy. From: Meade Paravane edit: actually, I'd like to hear what Mike thinks about SL.. Age play, bots, camping, grief, etc, etc... LL (understandably) doesn't want to get into this mess but Mike has it as his chosen career.. Actually, if only Linden Lab would enforce their own rules, most of the problems you list wouldn't happen. Politics really has absolutely no relevance here, and I don't see "stopping people building a 40m tall fuschia pink casino next to my home in SL" as being much of a policy, to be honest. Broccoli

It's not often I agree with Broccoli, but this is one I'm on board 100%. Any Polotician is here only to benefit themselves and their campaigns, their presence will add nothing to the SL community, I don't care what their media lackeys say. In fact where politicians go, so do the prying eyes of the media, get ready for some other sensastionalist headline hunter looking for his next big scoop. As far as I am concerned, politicians have NO palce here in SL, and I will avoid them like the plague.

What if, for example, there were people in SL interested in politics and wanted to learn more? Or maybe somebody actually knows of this guy (I don't.. no offense, Mike) and wants to ask questions or debate issues with him? Would he still have no place in SL?
Who cares if his presence in SL is self-serving, as long as he's not using tax $ to pay tier and some residents find it interesting and/or useful?
And no, I don't know him or work for him or know anything about him except what's written above.

Mike is running for US President.. All residents in SL are going to be impacted by age verification before long, at least in part because of the laws here in the US. Some won't feel it very much, some will feel it like having a physics-enabled brick dropped on their little prim heads. I know I'm not happy about giving up any part of my SSN and am finding myself more and more concerned with identity-related isues as I get more and more wired.. Wouldn't you like to ask somebody like Mike what he thinks about this sorta thing? I'm not naive enough to think that a chat with him or one of his minions would get any laws changed but, just IMO, it might be interesting to see what he's got to say about it and offer up my perspective.. So.. Really? Zero value for you?

So.. Really? Zero value for you? Yes. This is information I can find in real life, same thing with Corporate Advertising. I am not interested in it in SL. That being said, I don't begrudg anyone who wants to participate in this aspect of RL here in SL. It is apparent more and more will be looking to Sl as an extension of RL. I'm just not one of them.(Some also has to do with the fact that Government and political discussion are part of my RL work, so I tend to want to avoid it in my play time).
