Second Life Views 2 - Planning Underway

I'm planning to hold Second Life Views 2 during the SLCC on August 20.

The structure of this meeting will be a little different from SL Views 1 because of the conference. We'll meet 11-4 (or so) at Fort Mason Center where the conference is being held. We'll have 2 sessions. One will be on XML-UI; the other still remains to be decided. Rather than 8 participants we'll have up to 20. This size will impact the discussion somewhat, but I think we can still be productive.

Your thoughts on the application process, the structure of the meeting, and agenda topics are very welcome. I'll be opening up for applications next week.

I'm going to assume that LL will be paying the transportation and lodging costs for the 20 or so that are chosen. If so, I think at least two of those spots should be reserved for those that would like to attend the conference (and Views), as well as visit San Francisco, but could not afford to otherwise. Maybe some sort of 500 word essay contest. The others spots should be split between those that are successful and well-known in SL (based on a variety of characteristics), and those that are chosen randomly by LL (try to put some focus on very new players).

I'd love to attend, as long as I can be home by the afternoon of the 22nd, as I plan on attending a Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young concert at Jones Beach that night. ;)

Can we be in two Views groups? ;P

The idea of an Essay isn't bad. Maybe a short one on any topic of their chosing that they feel passionate about. Or maybe just a simple application.

For the other topic, maybe something to balance out the "feature" kinda thing of XML-UI with like a community oriented topic.

I completely, totally agree. One technical thing, one "social" thing. What that topic is should probably be decided by those that actually attend the conference.

I'll be at SLCC, and wouldn't mind attending one of these.

Linden Lab, you're such a tease!

Come on, stop pretending to address the concerns of residents and get some balls!

The agenda should be:

"Here at LL, we do whatever we feel like. If you don't like it, then fuck off!"

I dare you!! :)

You know it's true! and the sooner the residents know it, the sooner they can all shut the hell up moaning!.

So scrap feature suggestions and the bug reports, then we'll all know where we stand. I'm not against you guys doing whatever you feel like doing, but it's just a little frustrating to see Linden Lab pretend otherwise.

If 100% of the residents voted for large bouncing genitalia on their avatars? Would you add it? NO!!!

If 100% of the residents asked for bug X to be fixed? Would you fix it? NOOO!!!

So what's the freaking point?

Robin, if you want to take a bunch of residents out for a drink, then fine. Have a lovely day! But please, try not to ask them about the features they'd like to see. pleeeease!!

* Takes a deep breath *

All my love,

Starax

Having been to the first Views meeting, I thought it was awsome!

Everyone is like, 'WTF you didn't solve our problems!!!' We were not invited there to troubleshoot problems, LL wanted to bounce future plans an ideas off us, not beat a dead horse with something they had already covered. It was more to get a view from outside the LL box, get some residents in various fields (from SL) to submit their point of views and how it would effect their SL exp. Sure we have some bugs, we will always have bugs, but when Cat Omega, myself and all of us, (Cat started it :) ) made Philip do a double take on some issues with SL that would prevent growth; I think that's what they wanted!

They submitted some future plans and ideas to us and we gave them feedback. Which is exactly what they wanted. Some things like open registrations are being covered by LL, we didn't need to spend time on that. We didn't want to waste our time beating a dead horse. We did make some suggestions, but it stopped at that. I think the feedback that Robin got from all of us being in a room was amazing, when the discussions opened up, it was great to see all the ideas and various point of views flow out.

Anyways, I had a great time, I loved to see that LL was very much alive and well managed. However the success on the views meetings will be a combination of picking the right topics and people that attend. (At first I didn't think the topics were important, however they unfolded into VERY important issues covering almost all angles of SL, in part this was caused by the attending residents and their various backgrounds in SL.)

So if Robin needs more peeps to come down, put my name in the pot again. ;)

p.s. You can like views or you not, i'm not trying to shove it down your throats. I for one who went down first hand and participated thought that it was very productive. LL got some golden information out of it.

Sorry, 3rd post... If it were decided by us, we would probably still be beating a dead horse and waisting LLs time. I think a couple topics and open discussion would be a better idea. Like we had 4 'controlled' sessions, perhaps have 1 as open topic and moderated by Robin so we don't just spin around in circles or debate about something that LL has already set in stone\decided\covered\is handelling

I need to clarify, we will not be paying all travel expenses for the people participating in this session. I know that falls outside of the original program design, but it's also the reason we can open the session to 20 people.

I could contribute to travel expenses for the people who participate on a "need" basis (essentiallly a scholarship). I can add that question into an application.

Robin,

I think it would be a good idea for the news media outlets to be represented in both sessions, even if it is just as observers. That way the conversation can be "covered". I know that Katt Kongo and I will be in attendance and could represent The Messenger. I'm sure some of the other SL media outlets will be there as well.

I also have a personal interest in the XML conversation. It will probably play a role in an upcoming project I am planning. However, I probably doubt I have the technical skills to contribute beyond "gee I wish I could...."

Huh, there's an application process? I thought it was just kind of a "we'll call you, dont call us" thing, Robin?

There was some interest expressed in trying out an application process, and I thought this would be a good time. If not, then we'll use a process similar to the last one, choosing people from the list of SLCC attendees.

The next meeting, SL Views 3, will be in October and will be limited to 8 attendees, as the first one was.

More diversity of attendees need...
07-15-2006 10:41
The attendee list of the first one struck me as a bit lopsided, in that only one of the chosen 8 residents had been in-world for less than two years, and they all seemed to be either land barons or builders. I'd like to see some representation of newer residents, and of people from other interest groups (creators of clothing, furnishings, etc, clubgoers and other social types, and so forth).

But I reiterate, what - aside from warm fuzzies - resulted from it?

I think the last group should have included at least one experienced animator since the subject was avatar movement technology and animation.

Just for anyone who hasn't noticed Robin has posted more notes as to what was covered at the first Views meeting on her blog http://secondlife.blogs.com/change/ .

Not sure how I missed this, but then, I've missed a lot since my surgery!

Anyway, I would like to ditto the person's idea about submitting an application. Maybe a simple page or two with 5-6 questions regarding the sort of thing you would want to hear, which would cover what the individual does in SL, what kind of future that individual would like to see for SL, what topics of interest that person is particularly interested in, what he/she thinks the major problems/plusses are for SL.

And whatever (like I said, I'm not thinking so well anyhow, lol).

This would be an excellent way for a person to let LL know they are interested in participating, while at the same time letting LL know a bit about the person so you can make choices which would give you a good cross-section regarding those topics you plan to discuss.

I am so glad you are considering ways to include more SL'ers.
