Hi, moving to St Croix to teach in January.

Anyone from the USVI, BVI, PR, Bermuda, or Antilles of any description out there?

Sure would like any info about connectivity issues or who to bribe to get stuff done.

Thx!

Ferran and I were in Belize up until this Fall. We were able to get a pretty decent DSL connection, but it is so country specific that I can't tell you much.

All internet service for the Caribbean comes out of Miami on a fiber optic cable. It's a big circle which can function with one break but not two. Last winter two boat captains drug their anchors over the cable damaging it so we were without connection for about a week while they worked on repairs. Belize's ISP (government owned) switched back to satelite briefly while the work was going on.

The best advice I can offer is to get a friendly local to help you out. Your landlord should be able to hopefully tell you everything you need to know. You will probably pay as much as you would in the States for cable to get DSL... And be sure and check in advance that the place you want to live has it. Also you should expect that the bandwidth you get will be considerably less than what they tell you you're getting.

I assume you are taking your computer with you. We did and were very glad of it. The equipment available was both very high priced and several years behind. We did web searches for computer stores in advance to get an idea of what would be available.

Oh.. and electricity is very likely to go bye bye.

well, I made it.

Wireless Broadband seems to work ok, so far. Had a few drop-offs w/o notice , but seems stable. Getting a 512/256 DSL seems like its gonna be a logistical nightmare rivaling the Alaskan Highway tho. Though it would be nice to have redundant back-up , lol, in place.

Anyhow any folks from PR or the other islands feel free to look up this 'traveller'.
