Why should O2 DSL be wireless? It's only the router that is wireless. I'm on 1&1 DSL 16000 with a wireless router and SL is working just fine with a 54MBit WLAN card. Or am I missing something here?

Or does the Op mean he has access to a cafe/bar/Imbiss or something that he can connect via wireless. 16000 is pretty standard now on upgrades from flatrate 2000 DSL, but Cable Deutshland currenlty offer 26000mbs with a home entertainment packet etc. Router is inclusive if I remember rightly and as Alyx said, the router is wireless not the actual connection.

Not sure about the situation in Germany, but some ISPs are rolling out national wifi networks in the UK for which there is no cabled option. Ie. You subscribe to a wifi specific package and hope to god your home (and business) is within good range of a hotspot because connecting to a telephone socket ain't an option. If this is the case with O2, I would say their wireless only package is unlikely to be suitable for SL. Although the introduction of Draft N wifi access points and networking cards means the technology is finally catching up with wired connections, this (Draft N) standard is not being utilized by any ISP at this point. So, old wireless speeds will apply and latency tends to be so bad that SL officially doesn't support wireless connections. Oh you'll get it working. But expect to have all kinds of problems. Prims catapulting back to their original positions when building, rez delays, chat lag, etc., etc.

DSL = Digital Subscriber Line. That's a good old Copper Wire. Good for SL. Add a WLAN Router, like the FritzBox, and you can Connect by Network Cable and WLAN. Network Cable is better. I use WLAN, it only works if you Connection is good enough, so it does not disconnect and reconnect each 5 Minutes.
There is some Confusion because some Internet Service Providers have no Clue about the Meaning of DSL and offer Bullshit Connections, like SkyDSL (Satelite, stay away from that).
Now, if there is no DSL in your Region... UMTS might work, or a Custom Wireless Service. We have some Custom Wireless Service Providers here in Bayern, its not WLAN what they offer. Will it work for SL ? Truth be told, i dont know.
If there is no DSL available at your place, O2 can not offer DSL for you. All phone Lines are owned by Telekom. If they see no profit in offering DSL Service to you, they will never install it.

I can use SL in my back garden via WiFi, but I have to expect getting kicked now and then. But always connecting to a hotspot that might be a hundred meters away??? Not a good idea. And yeah, Nigatsu-stay away from satellite "DSL"! Btw, i think O2 actually doesn't use Telekom lines, they use Arcor.

Heard, vaguely. You should call O2 and ask them about the technical details, though.

Oh right, for the poor people who are stuck with high tech fibre optic cable which doesn't work with DSL...I still think it sounds dodgy. For DSL 16,000, the "normal" version, you need a pretty good connection already because otherwise it won't be stable. I can't imagine that kind of thing totally wireless.

So many conflicting terms here. Wireless internet = has no wires. DSL = comes via the wired telephone line. Fiber Optic Cables = Cabled. Ie. Wired. Not a wireless product. Which is it? A wifi only package being mismarketed with the word "DSL" to imply speed, I guess. It's certainly possible to get 16Mbps wirelessly (up to 270Mbps with draft-N wifi), but many wireless adapters won't go above 11Mbps. So make sure your own hardware supports it From: someone Wow. But always connecting to a hotspot that might be a hundred meters away??? Not a good idea. Try a few miles away. My nearest Wannadoo hotspot is over two miles away but has a very strong signal. Brilliant for mobile phones now that more and more are supporting WiFi. We already get free WiFi in Manchester. Not that I live there anymore ;_; but I do pass through often and save a fortune on net usage there.

Germany isn't very hotspot friendly...at least not for free hotspots. But I saw this huge WiFi antenna today for 150 quid, I could probably BE a hotspot for my whole TOWN with that thing...the size of a satellite dish.... And I know that in eastern parts of Germany, they thought they were clever when they put fibre optic cable as telephone lines everywhere. Until someone noticed they can't be used for the split signal that DSL and a normal copper cable telephone line share...

Germany needs to take a leaf out of Sigbritt Löthberg's book! http://slashdot.org/articles/07/07/12/1236231.shtml Or maybe not. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/7103426.stm Apparently the internet is going to break soon. =D
