I am working on a large-scale educational project within SL. As part of the project we are developing some Voice over IP software. We need some help producing an object that would detect which users are within listening range of each other and email this data to our server.
We expect to have around 100 AVs in the sim at any time, and need to run the localization script constantly to determine the location of each AV without slowing down the sim too much.
Does anyone have any insight into how we would produce this system?

From: Luminia Olsen *sighs* use teamspeak or Ventrilo dont start making new things that have no use if you have these programs We need the voice system to be integrated with SL so only people standing next to each other with a sim can hear each other. People will have to be switched between channels automatically as the move around the sim. Teamspeak or Ventrilo don’t provide this kind of capability. Also the voice quality of these products is not good enough for our needs.

Integrated or common

I endorse Yeats view. Integrated to match the current IM pattern would be best. If you are going to use an outside source, you can probably use Skype, or voice from MSN/Yahoo. People could probably do that on their own right now. With software they alread have.
Iron Perth has been working on using Skype with SL. Perhaps he has some advice.
Personally, I would be cautious about working with 3rd party software unless I am confident that the company will be in business in 2010. And I think SL would be cautious about working with 3rd parties because of liability and license concerns. TM
