When asked if most people want to learn Photoshop or Paintshop Pro, a resounding answer of memememememe happens.
There is a reason I don't currently teach Photshop in RL. I had to keep the price of my class high to keep up with the changing versions of Photshop (remember folks, legal businesses buy a copy FOR EACH COMPUTER).
So I've thought about switching to teaching free software like GIMP.
Is anyone interested enough in this software to merit teaching it in SL?
Please post here or better, yet, respond to me in-game

I can only add my $0.02
I started really using and learning the GIMP when I needed to create textures in SL. I could've "illegally copied" PhotoShop from the web, but I try to use only legal software, and, of course, GIMP seemed to do all that's needed.
On first glance, I thought GIMP is a not-too-good but barely usable software, but then after reading tutorials, tips and tricks, I realized it can do so so many things, much more than I ever need. True, some things are not easy to learn first, and may take more steps than PhotoShop, but when you get the hang of it, you realize GIMP is all you need.
And wow, GIMP even seems to support my graphic tablet better a bit than PhotoShop, though it's true that GIMP's not yet perfect and there are things that it doesn't know as well as PS.

Thanks for the feedback

I know Photshop intimately, but have only dabbled with GIMP.
Looking at the latest version I see that it has some of most important tools that Phothshop has such as clonign and layer masks.
I'll see about getting a basic course in Gimp into next months schedule at Prim College.

Great offer!

I almost d/l GIMP recently. Would definitely attend if u did training. I do use PhotoShop 7 and still need to learn lots more but I do love experimenting.
I understand your logic in how to approach PS training with so many versions out. Maybe either do it in versions or see which is the most widely used in sl.
PS has more features then I will ever need to use, BUT, would like to know as much as possible in making my clothing line and in my other passion, textures.
Would love to talk with u more in world on this if u ever have the time.
Thanks!

Love to learn more about free software! Although I have photoshop, I don't know much about it...so learning about any graphics program is a bonus! I'll come if you schedule classes.

I used to be a die hard Photoshop user until I got my hands on Gimp. I've been slowly teaching my self the program and utilizing an online tutorial a friend directed me too but learning from someone with experience with the program is always a plus. Sign me up!

Gimp
07-20-2005 11:24
I've been teaching the GIMP to people in one on one sessions. Everyone seems to like it, and they're pleased that it's free and legal.
I've toyed with the idea of making a static display style tutorial, but much prefer working with people individually.

I don't even necessarily want to learn Photoshop or GIMP or whatever for use in SL, particularly ... but the training would likely prove helpful to my RL endeavors. And who can afford RL software classes? Now I can dodge the forbidding costs and inconveniences of ACC, say, and instead attend (well, schedule allowing) Prim College. It seems you're as generous as you are talented, sir, and that is much appreciated.

Generous?

Are you kidding.. I plan to get paid a whole $2 usd for class! I mean.. think of the ..uh.. mouse pads.. I could.. hmm gum?
Ok so looking at the latest version of GIMP it has fixed a lot that kept me from teaching it in place of PS. In fact it has ONE great tool "make seamless" that is worth downloading it for.
One of the first classes I"ll put together is how to stop edges from having those nasty white edges ... STOP CUTTING THE IMAGE TWICE PEOPLE! *ahem.. sorry pet peeve.
I'll announce the class when it is ready, it will be held at Orion 52,80.. somthing like that big white building can't miss it, or type Prim College in "find".

I would love to learn. Can GIMP edit .psd files - can you use it for skins and such in SL? That is a question I have not yet had answered to my satisfaction. Thank you.

Can't make it overnight
07-27-2005 00:55
Well I have to say I can't make a GIMP class overnight. Would have to ween myself of PS. Once concern I have is how interactive could the class be with people having to flip back and forth or would they be happy to "absorb" and try later. Once the basic building and texturing classes are in place at Prim College we'll start work on GIMP classes. Thank you all for the feedback! -Blueman

Update
08-10-2005 17:01
I've been doing Gimp classes with reasonable success.
As long as everyone is running SL in windowed mode, switching back and forth isn't a big problem. I also found it helpful to put up screenshots of the interface so I can point to the widgets.
Now I need a better laser pointer.
I'll likely host a tutorial once or twice a week. Usually at 10pm Pacific.

Teaching in SL
08-11-2005 12:59
I taught my first large group yesterday. It consisted of seven students. I've noticed a few challenges when teaching groups in SL.
Everyone has vastly different skill levels. - I had hoped that the more advanced students would help out some of the beginner students.
People seem to clam up when in a group lesson. - It takes a lot of work to determine if people are keeping up or not.
Teaching a graphics program via text is SLOW. - I used screenshots to point to interface elements, but it's still SLOW.
I would appreciate any comments or suggestions on how to improve my classes.

Gimp was feelin the suck a few years ago but I wouldn't mind coming back to it if they've continued development ;0

If this is happening I'd love to know. The GIMP is my default image editing software but I'm still a novice.

Tips
08-29-2005 19:20
From: William Withnail Everyone has vastly different skill levels. - I had hoped that the more advanced students would help out some of the beginner students.
What I do is post an outline of what will be covered. This way students can choose what class to attend. From: William Withnail People seem to clam up when in a group lesson. - It takes a lot of work to determine if people are keeping up or not.
Choose milestones in your curriculum to stop and say "ok has everyone got step #1 before we move to step #2" From: William Withnail Teaching a graphics program via text is SLOW. - I used screenshots to point to interface elements, but it's still SLOW.
I'm thinking of scripting a few animation to illustrate some times. I'd like to rely more on video and use flash animated screens but that is not hyper dependable yet.
