In 1987 (!), Chickering and Gamson developed Seven Principles of Good Practice (GTPs). When applied to adult education, these principles worked very well. In 1996, and again in 2003, Chickering and Ehrmann review the principles and applied them to an online educational environment. The principles not only held up, but they were even more applicable in an online environment (Chickering and Ehrmann, 2003).

The principles are as follows:
1. Encourages contact between students and faculty
2. Develops reciprocity and cooperation among students
3. Encourages active learning
4. Gives prompt feedback
5. Emphasizes time on task
6. Communicates high expectations, and
7. Respects diverse talents and ways of learning.

My question to my fellow educators is two-fold: How are you using SL as an educational tool, and do you incorporate any of the principles as part of your curriculum? After reviewing the list, do you find that you are using GTP but did not know it?

I am NOT an educator BUT does your educational establishment allow use of internet for places like SL? Or even BBC?
You should check.
