I do a college ITV class to a number of area high schools (non-high school students also attend) and I want to use Second Life for office hours (since students will not be able to actually be on campus for office hours. Some of these students are under 18 and some of these students are over 18. The under 18 students are having difficulty getting a security code (which they are to receive if under 18). Any help on this? Thanks!

Persons under 18 are not allowed on the main Second Life grid. Persons OVER 18 are not allowed on the Teen Second Life grid.

I'm sorry, but I'm afraid you're out of luck.

Actually you would be able to have a mixed age class on the Teen Second Life Grid on a private region, but it would involve background checks, purchase of a private estate and stringent rules of its usage. It likely doesn't seem like a suitable option for your purposes but could be something to keep in mind for future planning purposes.

short blurb:
The Teen Second Life™ virtual world (TSL™ ) is strictly for teens between the ages 13-17. The only adults allowed on the mainland or teen-owned Private Regions in TSL are Linden Lab® employees.

If you are an educator and want to work with teens in TSL, you have the opportunity to buy a Private Region (island) and participate, but you cannot leave that Estate and visit the TSL mainland or teen-owned Private Regions. Teens from the mainland will be able to visit your Private Region if/when you choose, but Educators are required to inform teens that there are adults present. Also, if you are planning to use a Private Region in the Teen Second Life virtual world, you will need to provide a background check for security and safety reasons.

Students age 18+ are considered adults. Any students in your program who are 18+ will need to submit a background check. Because of this requirement, most programs with mixed age groups of 13-17 and 18+ choose to run simultaneous projects in TSL for students under 18 as well as in the Second Life® virtual world (SL™ ) for students 18 and older.

Or, run two separate office hours, one on each grid. Or, run something like a Yahoo, Messenger, AOL life chat for your office hours.
