Are us Greeters doing more than mentors now?

I am sorry, but I don't see mentors going thru what we all greeters do. I go to the welcome area and they are just there while a greeter helps the new person taking them here and there.

I see bunch of people with their titles of "SL Mentors" just for looks? I don't see them working at all?

What do they do?

Is there a competition going on I didnt hear about? I didnt realize that helping others was sport.

You dont see them going through what you go through, but thats just it, you dont see what goes on. When I would wear my Mentor tag in the welcome area, I would frequently appear to just be standing there not doing a dang thing. But many new people are shy about speaking up in a crowd and its common for a Mentor to have two or three IM going on while down there. A newbie sees the Mentor tag and its an open invite to IM for personal help. That was a very common scenerio for me to be chatting in IM to two or three new people at once as welcome area mentor.

There are probably Mentors, Greeters, and Live Helpers that do way more than others and there are some that dont pitch in at all, but why judge without knowing the whole picture?

I have been doing what Greeters do ever since I became a Mentor. But, I am not an official Greeter. It is not uncommon for me to hang out with someone new for two or three hours, just chatting and explaining things. "OMG, three hours!?!" Yes, and often many times into their first couple of weeks. I help people that want my help because I enjoy doing it. But, I do it on my own time, when I am in the mood for it.

I almost always wear my Live Help tag, but I still consider myself a Mentor first and foremost. I have to wear LH active if I want to see the help messages come in. I think I do a decent job at LH, but there is always room to improve and I try to learn more everyday to be more helpful. But, as a Live Helper, I am also serving as a Greeter and Mentor. The three roles are basically the same for me.

Should there be more Mentor events? Yes, I think so. But its not my place to tell Mentors to get off their butt and host events. We are all volunteers, we do what we do because we want to help out, when we can.

Do what you do because you love doing it.

So True Loki,

Just the other day Tang and I were chatting about how our children are doing.
As Metors we Teach and give out what we can and know anywhere and everywhere, sometimes in a class formate others at a welcome area or a group settings. and almost 100% is done though IM as the person is very weary of asking in the first place.
Greeters on the other hand, ARE the very first impression a new AV see and hears there role and foremate is outgoing and cherful and knows how to pass them off to a sandbox, mentor, class going on ect. and get ready for the next one to make feel welcome and traffic cop along to where there intrests is.

Greeters get them here ,Its up to the rest of us to Keep them.

I do not believe that it's a question of who's doing more. The goal of all the programs (& those of us who volunteer for them) is to help new residents & make them feel welcomed

If it seems that someone isn't doing as much as you doesn't mean that they aren't. & even still, let's say they aren't. The program(s) are voluntary & we each contribute as much as we can when we are able. Some may contribute more then others but imo it doesn't mean that those unable to help more ofter are any less valuable.

Another thing to consider, many of us mentors are also involved in more then one volunteer program. So it's highly possible we maybe helping others in another capacity (live help, greeting, or teaching)

Palomma - I hang out at the welcome gate and as Loki pointed out, I often have several IM's going all at once trying to answer peoples questions. In addition, when a new person wants to learn how to build, I sometimes go with them to the sand box or to their property and spend an evening or two with them rezzing prims and showing them other things.

Not everyone has the same approach to helping, I tend to stand in the background and then when I see someone looking a little lost I say Hi and ask them about themselves and what they have done so far in SL.

I do think that what greeters do and what mentors do overlap at times, but I don't think it really matters as long as people who want help can find it. :)

Not you guys... I know personally you guys have always work hard, since I came a year ago, when I was new. Not you at all.

My mistake, I shouldn't have pointed to "all mentors" over all, but I do see many others that I have never see around in welcoming area or even helping, not even bringing mentoring classes and they have their titles and/or not even wear them (which is not necessary)

Funny thing that the ones that are constantly working... you guys came quick to speak up and defend yourself, and that makes me think that you guys rock...

Sorry about that...

Merwan.... I will never forget how much you helped me when I was new and I showed my first design in a show and tell.

Loki, you too and Rose, you guys always there for everyone, same as Wave, seen Wave in the welcome area and Malana of course always bringing cool events... was great help to me a year ago...Malana took time and showed me to dance.

But you guys always there... what what I mean is Where are the rest????

I still remember early last year when I first joined SL under my first acount, I was a Very tall green av with a party hat on my head, lantern in my hand, and underwear on my behind and nothing else. I ran into loki at his little shop down by the river as he was making some stuff to sell. He helped me to get aquainted with SL, and took me on a boat ride in his speed boat around the rivers and lakes to see a volcano. I was very impressed with his dedication to help me to see what SL had to offer.

Loki, if you are still reading this thread, I thank you for your help and hard work, and I invite you to see my newest creation still under construction. I am building a castle in Baird where I will actually have plenty of stuff for newbies to include tons of free item vendors donated by SL residents and businesses. Keep up the good work.

PS. The castle is taking a while to finish, as it takes up over 1/4 sim and reaches high enough into the sky to not be able to see the top of it from the ground.
