log from the greeter meeting
12-13-2005 18:45
Jeska Linden: hey everyone
Jeska Linden: hmm, i wonder where everyone else is :)
Jeska Linden: And here I am with good news...

Jennifer McLuhan: Xylo has a RL meeting
Jeska Linden: The new in-world greeter management is this close to done *holds her fingers up about 2 cm apart*
Jeska Linden: I was hoping for last week, but the developer was working on 1.8, but this week he should have more time to finish it up
Jeska Linden: :)
Jeska Linden: The way it will work -- is that you will have a HUD that you wear while you're in-world and in 'greeter' mode
Jeska Linden: You can drop your information into it and it'll update the master selection screens on Help Island.
Jeska Linden: I hope to add a BUNCH more greeters once the program starts :)

Usagi Musashi: thats wonder
Jeska Linden: Have sort of been holding off until the revamp was done.
Jeska Linden: Then once you get selected it'll blink and pop up a little notice
Jeska Linden: And then you can click on it and it'll offer you a teleport to Help Island where you will pick up your new resident :)
Jeska Linden: Or you can click "No thanks" and it'll automatically make you unavilable until you select otherwise.
Jeska Linden: And it's a very small HUD so it shouldn't be obtrusive, but it's more noticable than the object im that gets lost now :)
Jeska Linden: Plus it'll be easier to locate everyonel

Usagi Musashi: wow that really does help
Jeska Linden: yeah, it should really solve the problems we've been having
Jeska Linden: :)
Jeska Linden: Aside for that, we've really been focusing on Help island to try to get everything set up and ready for once the greeter selection in-world is ready

Usagi Musashi: omg when locate the newbie will really be a upgrade
Michael Fairplay: Yes will make it a lot better lol
Jeska Linden: :)
Jeska Linden: I'm sorry it's taken so long

Jennifer McLuhan: So we won't have the flag on the web site anymore?
Jeska Linden: and thank you all so much for your constant patience.
Usagi Musashi: heck yea think about it you ask then when they fly off in the wrong dirction.where they are what happens ...... lol you lose them
Jeska Linden: Nope, the web site portion will be taken down
Michael Fairplay: Jeska there is one problem I wanted to discuss

Jeska Linden: Plus with Help Island, they should have gotten their technical questions answered and be ready to check out the rest of SL
Jeska Linden: Sure thing Micael, what's up?

Jennifer McLuhan: So it doesn't matter that I deleted myself by accident?
Jeska Linden: er Michael!
Jeska Linden: Jenn - oh! I can readd you

Michael Fairplay: It seems like in some instances you'll get like three greeters not ices in a row
Jeska Linden: *nods*
Jeska Linden: With the way it's set up now, you have to remember to remove yourself.
Jeska Linden: But with the new system, you'll be removed from the pool after you've been selected and agreed to greet someone.

Jennifer McLuhan: Oh good
Jennifer McLuhan: I sometimes get four in 15 mins

Usagi Musashi: GREAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! that really does help i use to get 5 6 even 7
Jennifer McLuhan: I would then turn off the flag
Jennifer McLuhan: but maybe 2 would actually show[/COLOR]
Jeska Linden: I'm so sorry about the way it was set up previously
Usagi Musashi: in 5 mins depending on the load of newbie waiting for greeters
Michael Fairplay: What happens to the newb ie if we select no thanks?
Jeska Linden: But I promise we've learned from our mistakes
Usagi Musashi: lol it was burnout time
Jeska Linden: They are asked to select another one from the list
Jennifer McLuhan: How many bithing grounds will you be having?
Michael Fairplay: ok good
Jeska Linden: *nods*
Michael Fairplay: as long as they aren't left
Usagi Musashi: well i tell you the first part of this program was a hell
Usagi Musashi: but it is getting better

Jeska Linden: I know it's been hard
Jeska Linden: The initial set up was more of a beta, but we've really learned a lot
Jeska Linden: About how to make it work better

Usagi Musashi: i remeber getting 10 or more people in 5 mins
Jeska Linden: Help Island is part of it
Michael Fairplay: For the most part I've enjoyed the greeters experiance
Jeska Linden: :)
Michael Fairplay: There haonly been two to three newbies that made me want to ask why me
Usagi Musashi: thats a given mich :)
Jennifer McLuhan: lol
Jeska Linden: Based upon your feedback about how most new residents had technical issues, we Jeska Linden: You've really been instrumental :)
Jennifer McLuhan: I think Help Isaland is a good idea
Jeska Linden: it really seems to help new residents 'figure' things out faster and in a safe place
Usagi Musashi: its been a pain but at the end it will work
Michael Fairplay: Wonderful
Jennifer McLuhan: I have been meetaing a lot of them at the begining and encourging them to go to Help Island
Jeska Linden: That's perfect
Jeska Linden: We hope that the greeters will feel comfortable hanging out there as well

Jennifer McLuhan: I think it is a good place to be. Often someone will just walk up to you with a question
Jeska Linden: So the plan is, once I get the in-world stuff tested and ready to go, I'll hold another meeting
Usagi Musashi: it sure beats the wa.......at the begainning for this project
Jeska Linden: Hopefully before the end of this week.
Jeska Linden: :)

Jennifer McLuhan: cool
Usagi Musashi: sounds good
Jeska Linden: Any other questions?
Jeska Linden: (it's been a Looooong day!)

Michael Fairplay: Jeska I have one but it's sort of off topic for greeters
Usagi Musashi: when will you be adding more greeters?
Jeska Linden: go forit!
Jeska Linden: As soon as the new system is ready - before the meeting

Usagi Musashi: ok
Jeska Linden: We'll have a big info meeting to trian on the new management stuff
Jennifer McLuhan: Do I need to remove the renewal of my application from the site, Jeska?
Michael Fairplay: What should we do when we observe a sim being attacked particurally when it's a sim we live in?
Jeska Linden: Michael - always contact a liaison right away
Jeska Linden: If you don't know who th liaison on duty is, send a note to Live Help -0 there is always a liaison or other linden watching
Jeska Linden: You can also call support if you can't find anyone and it's working hours
Jeska Linden: Jennifer, I'll just reapprove yoU :)
Jeska Linden: I still need that to keep track of you crazy kids
Jeska Linden: :)

Usagi Musashi: Us crazy? NEVER
Michael Fairplay: okay I went to live help last night but they told me all the lindens were busy so a live helper came and advised us to turn off scripts and the ability to drop objects and no fly
Jeska Linden: I'm sure once the new system is in place, ya'll will have more questions.
Jeska Linden: If it was last night, they were probably already aware of the issue - since 1/2 the grid was affected.

Usagi Musashi: this look like a major uograde inthe right dirction
Jeska Linden: :) I hope so!
Jeska Linden: Sometimes that happens, when things are actually breaking all over the place Michael.

Michael Fairplay: *nods* understandable
Jeska Linden: Ok guys, that's really all I had....
Usagi Musashi: than you jeska...
Jeska Linden: Just want to keep your spirits up for the upcoming change!
Michael Fairplay: Thanks Jeska
Usagi Musashi: and thank you jenn for telling of the meeting today
Jennifer McLuhan: yw
Usagi Musashi: OMG its going to be busy
Jennifer McLuhan: I got here and only saw an open field
Jeska Linden: :) :)
Jeska Linden: yeah the stage had been returned!
Jeska Linden: I'm going to post this log to the forums, so everyone else will see :)

Jennifer McLuhan: Jeska, I have a question
Jennifer McLuhan: what is the difference between a greeter and a mentor?

Jeska Linden: The big difference is in what you do -
Usagi Musashi: ummmm.the questen that been asked and cooked many times :)
Jeska Linden: a mentor is more of a question answerer and, as the name implies, mentor to a new resident
Jeska Linden: whereas a greeter is ther eto take new reisdents around the grid
Jeska Linden: it's possible that as the volunteer program grows the two groups will become more intertwines
Jeska Linden: er intertwined
Jeska Linden: So for example, a new resident heads over to help island and talks to a mentor who helps them buy some freebies, get new clothes on, tweak their technical settings...

Usagi Musashi: will that happen? in the near future?
Jeska Linden: then takes them to the greeter selection -- where they pick someone to take them on a hot air balloon ride or something
Jeska Linden: the Greeter comes and gets them on help island and takes them into the world :)
Jeska Linden: Yes, it would be in the future, not the near future :)
Jeska Linden: Does that make sense?

Jennifer McLuhan: Yes, We are more like guides
Jeska Linden: exactly!
Jennifer McLuhan: thanks
Jeska Linden: Thanks again for all of your patience guys :)
Usagi Musashi: many of us do both during the dev of a newbie first step.........its needed in ways because they at time deopending on th rl needs maybe mental abilites etc is req us to do both fort there understanding
