This is mostly a difference of people but also a slight rant.

The other day on Help Island, I met and was helping a new player he’s typical male collage kid, lol in that it seems all he can think of is sex.

One question he asked was how does someone make money here, sex?
I answered saying that’s one way but there are so many more things to do and learn, and that I would worry about those 1st
We briefly talked about scripting, building, etc to fulfill peoples sexual desirers..

I also told him he should learn as much as he could while on the help island, before he went to the mainland.

Later when I was able to return.. I was taking him out sailing in the bay around help island.. only to have him suddenly disappear.. He IMed me saying that he thought he messed up, in accepting a TP to the main land.
It turned out another mentor had Teleported him to Xcite, on the mainland, where she helped him experience some of the excitement of Second life. While I feel that’s certainly one of the more exciting aspects of Second life, its something that new residents should also find for themselves..
But then again who am I to say that the mentors actions were wrong..
I’ve done the same thing in the past

However here are some of the problems..
We now have a new resident on the main land who can hardly walk, and is now asking me all kinds of questions that should have been answered on Help Island.
Honestly I don’t mind helping people, that’s why I volunteered

The question though.. is that what the other mentor had done, did that really help the new resident, or was it a disservice?

Kristine – I can only speak for myself. The only time I TP a newbie in-world, is when I have been contacted by either a mentor, asking me to help someone or, by the new resident.

If the new resident contacts me and says I am supposed to be his/her greeter, I will ask if they have gone through Help Island. If they indicate they are still at one of the Orientation Islands, I will tell them to contact me when finishing HI.

However, I consider the new resident to be the boss. My job is to help. I always try and do what they might find interesting. If a new resident wants to see the clubs, I will take that person to a club.

You are correct in saying that a new resident should know the basics of SL, before venturing into the world. However, it is their SL. I will advise and I will recommend but, I will allow the new person to tell me what they want to do. I will then take them there.

Now, if it is something sexual, I may not hang around. Nor, will I participate in the venture. I merely tell them that I don’t do that and ask if there is anything else they might want to see.

You don't always know

I was not the mentor in question but ....

If the resident IMed a mentor (suppose they had traded calling cards) and didn't say that they were still on HI, there would be no way to know. We have to rely on that information from the resident. Further, there is no way to know that the resident is talking to anyone else.

The point isn't that it was sex, the point is that they were a) taken from Help Island and b) removed from a discussion with you. For the first, it might have been avoided if they could have checked the map. For the second, I don't see how that could have been avoided without asking.

Personally, I allow the residents to use FIND to discover the pleasures of the sexual realm.

Gesh I always have that problem with newbies a at times. But after awhile you learn to dela with it and move on the helping. Its takes a little skill to change the chat from sexual based to helper base. But it does work. Good Luck to you:)
