I think it would be a great idea if we could gather a list of useful resources, a FAQ, etc that could be distributed to newbies at the end of the Greeter Encounter.

I think we discussed this at the last Greeter meeting, but this poor forum looked so lonesome with no posts, so I just hadda. :)

Post your useful FAQs etc!!

I agree :-) For starters, do you think referring them to the Helping H.A.N.D kiosks should be part of the kit? /invalid_link.html

Michael is also working on a "Welcome to SL" kit with promo-type coupons from vendors and such (Like a "Welcome to the Neighborhood" kit you get when you move in RL) -

i've been thinking about doing the same.

a small package with a notecard explaining how to use the package as well! a short list of landmarks (ending with a location that could offer additional help), a few free items, a couple notecards explaining the UI, etc..

point is, good idea. if i do create one, i'll come back here and post where you can get a copy of it.

i have a Helping H.A.N.D. display on my land at: Miramare (212,116)

due to the lack of constant activity in the city, there's not much lag and it's just over the hill from the WA. easy to find.. there's absolutely nothing else on my land right now. lol..

I'm not a greeter, but I'd like to add my help by making a submission or two to the 'Greeter Kit', if such submissions are being considered....?

What I do when I get a greeter I hook them up with clothes, skins, hair etc and then I give them a free tat from my vendor and gesture to get them going. I also tweaked the welcome to second life notecard and when I am done with them or them go on their way. I always tell them have a problem Im me I am here to help and they do.

I have been having goodluck so far.

Since having been given the Helping H.A.N.D. FAQ and permission to redistribute this, I've been giving that away a lot. Thanks guys :)

Before that, I always give all newbies in sight the following text on a notecard: http://secondlife.game-host.org/article27visual1layout1.html. It's the background material for my own "SL Basics" classes as an Instructor, and was reviewed originally by Char and later by Haney. It still has a few incorrections, but I'm slowly updating it. It's also available at the wiki (Hank Ramos seems to have updated it a bit - thanks :) )

When the new resident asks the inevitable question "but how can I make money here?" I'll give them a notecard with this guide. Since I personally haven't done all the types of jobs listed there, my opinion may not be 100% accurate on some of the types of jobs. I have also updated it a bit with suggestions and comments when my information was seriously lacking. Still, it works well to give a first idea on what is available. I have seen some notecards on marketing your products, written by RL marketeers, which are awesome, but I don't have permission to redistribute them (they're often used as well in classes by their owners) and haven't got the time to write my own thoughts on the subject.

Feel free to use those texts if you wish. Or ask me for a notecard. You can also get from me the slideshow presentation for the "Introduction to Second Life" class, if you think that's helpful to you or to the newbies (either in-world as textures, or by email in PDF format) - I only use them in the Instructor classes.

I also collect Pathfinder's Picks, which are a great way to give them a list of places to visit (they're better than simply throwing landmarks at them, IMHO - something which I also do! - because it explains what you're going to see before teleporting there). I formerly used the Guide from His Grace (now StoneSelf Karuna), but, sadly, so many places have simply disappeared from this year-old list, that it's almost pointless to give it to anybody.

Moon Adamant and Dee McLean (among probably thousands of others) have designed "freebie packs", sorting through hundreds or even thousands of items, and separating them according to their type. I use them a lot. Moon's boxes have the llGiveInventory() script inside, so it's far easier to get 200+ items to the newbie at the same time. Sadly, since SL changes so more, many of those are not working these days with 1.6, and she doesn't have time to open all items again, test them one by one, and repackage them again. Dee is reputedly the major repository of freebies in SL. She has an interesting approach - she only distributes items that people have specifically given her permission to give away, so there is no chance you end up giving away a freebie without permission :)

Some Greeters simply do the Greeting part at the Yadni Junkyard or the Stillman Bazaar. This is a simple way to bring the newbies to places they'll probably use a lot (hehe), teach them how to buy things (even if it's only for L$1) and open boxes with contents. Also, it doesn't look so bad if you have to leave them there - they'll certainly spend hours looking around at all the stuff they can get there :)
