We were all there, believe it or not! or most of us. So of course you should hang out in SL! You don't need to be a programmer to have fun. hang out wherever seems fun to you or do what I did initially and go green dot hunting! (ok not so smart an idea when it is just two green dots very close to one another, maybe...)

Also, check out the events list. There are some things there that are fun to do now and then anyway. We have a fun movie quotes game on Saturday Nights and Tuesday Night is Name that Game with Cirga Control (so if you have a lot of experience with Video Games, this could be your niche!) Anyway, This is just at the Phoenix Spa Resort, but there are tons of awesome places to explore and a great place to meet people is at the sandbox as you learn how to shape your environment, (and even just personalize your avatar).

Relax and have fun and don't worry about programming. Just explore the world and meet people and be polite and nice and sooner or later you'll have both inventory and a friends list a mile long. :-) Welcome to SL!

Also, once you get through the various help stations (click the hands to find out what you gotta do there) you can IM an in world greeter to help you get adjusted to life in SL. Glossy Page is a greeter I know of, but there are lots of others who always try to make people's first hours and even days in SL a bit less confusing. :-) I say embrace the confusion coz some day you'll laugh about it. But do contact a greeter who can help you figure out the interface and probably set you about with some fun stuff to do.

Skrag,

Welcome to Second Life! There are lots of things to do here. If you go back to the welcome area where you started, you can find a Mentor or Greeter who will help you through the initial adjustment.

People here tend to be friendly. Use FIND. It is your friend. Type in a keyword and go look at stuff! There are some amazingly creative people here who want nothing more than for you to enjoy their work.

There is shopping, building, clubs, adventures, talking to people. There is more than I can describe here.

I am a Mentor -- IM me inworld and I'll give you some notecards and landmarks and if I'm not too busy rebuilding my (sadly destroyed) treehouse, I'll show you around.

Hi Skrag,

Hard to do any of the above when you can't even move. There are a couple things you can do to help with that and I'll drop a note card on you today (I'll send an Instant Message - IM to you to let you know it's in your inventory and what it's called so you know where to look.)

But before I send you the notecard, Do you know what the processor speed is for your computer, how much RAM you have and how much ram is in your video card?

Also, if you don't have DSL or Cable internet, you'll run into problems...you'll be able to play some, but you could have trouble attending your own wedding (should you have one) *winks at a friend who knows I am talking about them*

Let me know the answers to those questions and we'll see what's next.

Cheers,
Lizbeth

I can vouch for that. The first time I tried to log in, I was on dialup. I thought it was my graphics card that wouldn't let it run. :-p

The reason SL won't work with dialup is that everything in the world is user-created. That means that everything you see or hear or do has to be downloaded to your computer in real-time. I think you'll understand why this simply doesn't work with the speed of dialup. :-/
