[18:11] Jeska Linden: There have been many issues with the HUD, which is part of the motivation to explore other ways to grow the greeters...
[18:11] Jeska Linden: Given the overlap between mentors and greeters
[18:11] Della Street: the website worked best
[18:12] Jeska Linden: It might make more sense to have a mixture of mentors and greeters (helpful people) avialable on help island and at infohubs for new residents
[18:12] Jeska Linden: We can work out the best way to facilitate the hand offs
[18:12] Jeska Linden: But it seems clear that the web site had many issues...
[18:12] Jeska Linden: and the hud had more
[18:12] Jeska Linden: well different issues...

[18:18] Jeska Linden: But of couse, everyone has to make those types of decisions themselves :)

[18:19] Jeska Linden: So my next step with the Greeters is to open up some discussion on how we'd feel about rolling together into the Mentors group, posibly with a new name

[18:19] Della Street: sounds okay, does this mean their job will be different?
[18:20] Niamani Cooper: such a thin line btwn the 2 groups, i think it's a great idea

[18:20] Jeska Linden: I think the motivation of greeters as those volunteers who enjoy sharing bits of second life with new Residents will remain the same

[18:20] Julliette Westerburg: hmmm I don't mind it personaly, I feel most of what I have done when greeting is what a mentor does, so it wouldn't be any different, for me at least
[18:20] Jeska Linden: But it'd allow for better communication between the groups
[18:20] Niamani Cooper: i find myself being a greeter and teaching as well is what i mean della

[18:20] Jeska Linden: So, for example, we'd have one group with 2 roles - one mentor, one greeter
[18:21] Jeska Linden: and you could be both roles if you wanted or one or the other

[18:21] Jeska Linden: Then if you're on help island or wandering info hubs, you'd be able to throw on the tag you're interested in and go help as you want

[18:22] Della Street: I love doing the greeting part but when it comes to mentoring my partner is so much better than i am. We usually work together

[18:30] Tateru Nino: The roles of mentors and greeters in the new resident life cycle switched around a lot when Help Island came along. It's only reasonable to expect tht the roles will continue to adapt as SL changes underneath us.

I wasn’t able to make the July Greeters meeting. So, here are my comments on combining the Mentor/Greeter groups. I am all for it. The reasons communication between groups and flexibility of the volunteer’s time and.

After being a Greeter for about six months I also joined the Mentor’s group. My primary reason was communication. I find being able to see the Mentor IM’s very useful. More than once a Mentor has requested a Greeter. By seeing the request I have, on several occasions, responded.

There are times when I may not know the answer to a question. The Mentor IM channel always produces an answer. I recall one newbie who was very impressed with the Mentor’s because, I gave him a note card filled with Mentor responses to a technical question that I couldn’t answer. He received his answers within two to three minutes of asking the question.

The only difference I see between the roles is the amount of time spent with a new resident. I tend to work with a new person as a Greeter longer than I do as a Mentor. When Greeting, I will go through the basics of Second Life then give them a tour of areas that may be of interest to them. I often befriend them and follow up answering questions and, helping them solve problems or find something. As a Greeter, I may work with someone for a day or two, then following up for another week or two, afterward. So, I only wear the Greeter tag when I know I will have sufficient time to devote to the person.

When I don’t have a lot of time, I will use the Mentor tag and answer questions while working Help Island or one of the Welcome Areas or arrival points. Most of the time the people I help here are never seen again.

Another reason for combining the groups is to allow Greeters the ability to build and obtain items made for the Mentor group. As I understand it, currently anything a Greeter may build to demonstrate something on Help Island is removed quickly. Greeters can not take a copy of the Comm Unit or any other Mentor item. This hinders their ability to teach and help.
