Hi, i'm new to second life. I'm thinking about maybe getting some land so i can have a place for a house and a horse. Is land very expensive? Where would I go to look at some? Once i buy some, is it my private place? can i name it and teleport there when I want? how does it work?

Start here: Then use Inworld Search Land Sales to check whats available from private sellers and to see what mainland Linden Lab is selling by auction.

To actually try to answer your question, first, expensive is mostly relative in SL, and the bottom line is that it can be expensive just as much as you can find really good deals. With things bottoming out lately, most land prices are dropping. If you log into your SecondLife.com account, click the link for Land Manager, and click Land Use Fees. The figures there are the LL standard, and their pricing which you can use as a handy base. Most estate owners will jack up the rental price because private island tier is $295 a month, while mainland is $195, so the increase is to help offset that extra hundred bucks. If it's a little over the standard, take it in stride, you're not getting ripped off. Well, aside from actually buying/renting imaginary land, that is but I'm just sayin! If the amount is excessively higher than standard, pass it by. As Bear suggested, in world land search is a good option, but you should also check the forum classifieds. Before you put down, though, be sure to get familiar with the parcel sizes and full region's prim allotments. Lots of the homestead owners are renting/selling chunks of those with decreased prim allotments because the land wasn't structured for heavy use. If all you want is a house and a horse though, a homestead parcel will probably work for you. Theoretically, once you buy or rent a parcel, yes it's your own little spot in SL. Realistically, nothing in SL is really "private". Explorers, Noobs, and griefers tend to check out peoples' places or use them while the owner isn't there, and there's always camera panning to spy on people and various scripts to log conversations, etc. Just keep in mind that in SL, you are not "you" - you're mostly a cartoon, so what difference does it make in the long run if you get someone paying attention to your escapades? Not much in the grand scheme of things, but some people in SL are pretty cranky and take things far more seriously than they probably should. Yes, you can name your parcel whatever you want - by filling in the description in the About Land field, after you've taken possession of it. You can teleport to any point and set a specific landing point in your manager panel. Hope that helped a little more You're welcome to hit me up in world any time if you have questions about other things too. Good luck and hope you enjoy Second Life!

Land from private sellers will be cheaper than auction. If you are in to just exploring, go into view>property lines and then find a road and go for a walk. The yellow lines are for sale properties. If you find one you like, right click on about land and it will show you the price.
You can also open the map, click land for sale and scroll around.
The in-world land search confused the heck out of me at first. If you uncheck the price and area boxes and select mainland, it will show you the cheapest land first. Mainland is paid directly to Linden Labs every month, you just need a premium membership. Estate land depends on what the covenant says for payment, and most often seems to be weekly payment but no premium membership needed. You also want to make sure its a reputable estate.
I went with auction when I first bought land. If I were buying for the first time today; I would have spent more time looking, figured out search better and held out for what I really really liked rather than just based on price. Don't get me wrong, I had that land for nearly 2 years- but there were a lot of mistakes that I wish I had avoided. (How much meets my needs, what kinds of areas I really like etc).
Feel free to IM me in-world anytime if you need some help.
