I managed to earn 16 LDs the hard way so decided to purchase 25$ worth by Mastercard. This shows in my account as 25$ credit, but how do I convert this to Linden dollars which show on the top right of the screen?

Just click on the (L$) blue button in the up-right corner of the SL client. Buy L$ and your U$ credit will decrease without charge to your mastercard.
When your U$ balance get empty, just buy more L$ from the blue button and your mastercard will be charged instant.

That only if you CAN enter your Mastercard as paying method...i'm still trying that.

Hi Sin,
My Master Card was refused, so I phoned the number on the back of the card and was told that it was a security issue. They made some adjustment and it's been OK since then.
