Long, irritating day.
I was with a friend at a RP (Role play) place we go to and she had said some racist comments around other people. So they were fighting and the group already was being dramatic towards her and I prior to it all. I was just around them, trying to get both sides to stop fighting. Then the one of the two people who was mad said he was chatlogging it all to save if it ever happened again, he would report her.

So after that we left to a sim we had recently started hangning out at and she got an IM from someone who claimed to be a Admin. He was saying they take things such as racist comment very seriously and that he would talk to 'the comittee' about what would happen. It was hard to beleive this guy was a Linden undercover or anything of the sort. He had a partner and coincidently was in the group that was mad at her. She decided it best to report him for impersonation of a Linden, seeing there was no good proof.

We were just walking around and my friend went offline, banned. I went to another game we go on to talk with her, after she went off to bed I myself went back to get on SL and it said I can't access it from this computer. (guessing IP ban?) But the thing that confuses me is why was I IP banned? My account was put on hold and I apparently have to pay 9.95 USD to get back on. I got no e-mail telling me why it was on hold. My first guess is that the guy in the group hacked to get my account put on hold and IP banned. Why wouldn't the Lindens send me an e-mail?

I'm just really upset about this and I hope someone can tell me the actual reason it was put on hold, I spent quite a bit of money on it and would hate to see I lose everything because of some group drama.

(Not this account that was put on hold, couldn't get here with the one that was.)

I will post names when I'm sure I am talking to a Linden, seeing the cirrcumstances I hope you understand.

Not a good idea.
Well, there ARE races in RP and fighting races is part of roleplaying, so there is a good reason to make absolutely sure, when you are in character and when you are out of character. Racist comment OOC are definitely a no-no and should be stopped immediately without any arguing.

Hehe, the shrinks know this as the drama triangle. Two people are fighting and a third person comes in to make peace and at the end that 3rd person gets blamed to be the only brat.

That is one other issue. There are so many admins around, every sim owner is admin of his sim, and yes, they can do on their land, whatever they want. It's their thing to set up rules and put in admins for their sim.

I don't think that there was a Linden undercover. However, if there WERE racist comments in the chat and someone reported that by an abuse report, the Lindens have to act according to their TOS and punish those, who did the comments ... or supported them.

Well, the Lindens check chat logs in such cases, and normally only ban someone who really acted against the TOS.

Be careful, impersonating a Linden would mean that he said "I am xxx Linden". The simple comment to be an admin does NOT mean that someone impersonates a Linden.

Hehe, we all don't know in which way you interfered to make peace. If they were also upset about you, being a friend of the racist commenting person, they had probably mentioned both of you in their abuse report, so LL might have given both of you one or three days of break.

You might want to contact support and create a ticket to clear things and to try that the comment in your files about a ban might be deleted, if you ever might be interested to work together with some Lindens in the future.

If it's only the ban, you normally get 1-3 days for the first time, so you will be in the game much quicker than they can reply to your ticket.

If that is true, you definitely should create a ticket and tell your story to the Linden support. You will not find Linden support for this case in this forum.

I would like to see the Lindens more active in communication with their customers. But again, if that email got lost or was never sent, try a ticket to Linden support.

Yep, it's human: if you get involved in group drama, you might be the one punished. Happens in RL and in SL.
However: to clear things contact support.
I hope, you will find a Linden employee, who can help you.

Never tell names here in the forum. Do that in the ticket that you will send to support.

I get the message I can't log in from this computer, pretty sure that means IP ban.

I was lagging a LOT during the whole thing so I couldn't say much, only got in a few times that they should both stop.


Anyway, now I'm just back to wondering why I'm IP banned. If it was temporary I'm sure it would say so in the little box that pops up when I try to log in.

The other side didn't seem mad at me during any of it, much less acknowledge I was around and trying to stop all the fighting. One had chat-logged it and said if it ever happened again they would report my friend. After a little while I convinced my friend to just teleport out, so she did and I stayed for a minute or two and talked to the people and they didn't seem in the slightest angry at me then either. Then again they could have been angry at me and decided not to say anything. . . Can't help it if they do that.



I think I'll wait another day or two before I decide to bother a Linden with the problem, don't think anything will change but I'll just wait and see.

That is good news.
Anyway, you should create a support ticket to have the information about the hold deleted from your files. For several activities the Lindens want "residents in good standing" and even a one day hold that you do not deserve should be corrected.

Also, think about using the free phone numbers, that might be the quicker and easier way.

Or some problems on the way to the SL servers. I once also felt banned (from another site). I tried to traceroute to the server and found, I was stopped some routers before the server.
Talking to the guys that run the net that did not let me (my IP) pass, they found out, they had banned someone who did a DOS attack on their servers. But when they banned him, they changed two numbers of their IP and ... damn ... that was mine.

So again: create a ticket or phone them (0800 numbers in the US, Skype to those numbers from outside) and talk to them.

The bad thing always is, that it does not count, what we intended to do or say, but what those, who call themselves admins understand or want to understand. As especially in SL there are a lot of non professional people doing admin jobs, there are a lot of misunderstandings. We have to live with that.

My guess is, they told someone else that that one totally misunderstood your role in this issue. But we have to guess now ... not the best method to find out, what you can do.

Yep, Lindens do not really like to be bothered with individual problems, but they just occur and they have to live with problems of their customers. Even with a basic account you make their business moving on, so you ARE a valid customer. That is, what they have a support team for and you should contact them.
