Are you using a regular Second Life Viewer?
If so make sure that you have the Local Chat window open and the Communicate window open by clicking on those buttons to the bottom left.
Or are those the buttons that don’t work?

Could it be that you’ve changed your window size? I mean maybe the Communicate window is open but off the screen. Go into Preferences and look in the Graphics tab.
Play with the "Window size". Make sure you have the "Run Second Life in a window" checked.

You would probably get a better response if you posted your question in either the Resident Answers forum or possibly the Technical forum. Resident Answers is probably best.

I say that because this forum was created for a group that no longer exists. There is no Live Helpers group anymore. For reasons unknown, the forum moderators will not archive this forum, thus allowing people to post in a place unlikely to best serve their interests.

With regards to your problem, you might try deleting your settings.xml file.

The precise location of this file depends on what operating system you are using.

If you are using Windows XP, and did a normal installation, your settings.xml file will be in

C:\Documents and Settings\%username%\Application Data\SecondLife\user_settings

the name of the file is settings.xml

you might be able to delete this by doing Start / Run and pasting in

del C:\Documents and Settings\%username%\Application Data\SecondLife\user_settings\settings.xml

and then pressing enter.

Alternately you can use Windows Explorer to navigate to that folder and delete the file.

You might need to, in Windows Explorer, do Tools / Folder Options / View tab and select "Show hidden files and folders" so that you can see the folders you need to see to get to the settings.xml file.

Yes, I finally started using the New Posts button too, since we have no effective moderation system anymore, resulting in posts of all sort, such as scripting specific, texture specific, etc. threads staying in the catchall, mainly for new users forum.

I suspect there are plenty of people who don't use the New Posts button, though, and that posts in this forum for a now long defunct group don't get nearly as much attention as they would in Resident Answers.

They had the technical ability to close the Linden forums when they wanted to, some of which they archived, and some they left in place serving as links. I suspect they still have the ability to archive this forum, and it just seems really stupid to me to leave this forum here for a group that doesn't exist.
