I run SL exclusively through my home wifi setup. It's a little slow at times, but I generally don't have too many problems. But then - I have a particularly strong wifi signal. I can even lie in the hammock at the bottom of the garden and still just about get enough of a signal to run SL

I run exclusively wireless. Right now I'm only tethered to the wall because my laptop battery was recalled and Apple hasn't gotten around to sending me a new one yet. *shakes angry fist*
Anyway, I have no problems with my wireless connection. _____________________

Sometimes SL does have issues with running on wireless. It really depends on how strong your wireless connection is.

All depends on connection quality

If you have a good strong wireless connection, SL should work just about as well as it does over a wired network connection. The only disadvantage will be slightly higher latency (we're talking milliseconds here), which will SLIGHTLY slow the responsiveness of the world, probably about as much as moving another 100 miles away from San Francisco would. Even the slowest of the usual wireless network standards, 801.11b, is much faster than the speed at which SL will send you data.
If you have a weak wireless connection, or one that is frequently interfered with by other radio spectrum users (other wireless networks, cordless phones, microwave ovens, Bluetooth headsets...), things are different. Your quality of SL life might well be affected noticeably, including random disconnections from the world. There are some other forms of wireless networking besides the usual WiFi (802.11) standards. Some of them are much slower, like the ones based on cellular telephone networks, and SL will not work really well on them. |

I had a lot of disconnection problems with wireless. Everything but SL works fine and I have a decent signal strength.
Since switching back to wired its much, much better. |

I run SL wireless all the time, I've never actually played it while wired! I've never had a problem.

I go with my husband and son to stay with friends a few times every year. While we are there, all three of us play SL using our laptops on their wireless network, without any problems whatsoever. I have even been known to carry my laptop from one part of the house to another while connected to SL, and the connection has been solid.

My connection to my ISP is wireless. They call the transmitter a "radio", I believe.
The packet loss and latency in SL are usually good enough. No disconnection problems. And the latency, it seems to depend on the sim.. or the phase of the moon. ![]() |
