Hi Lucy
The audio file needs to be 44.1 Khz--16 bit--and no longer than 10 seconds.

After converting your song to the WAV format Keenan details above, splitting it into 10 second clips, and finally uploading it.. you will need to use a script to play them all together as a whole song.

I have a few freebie ones that can do this for you at my studio. See my profile in-world or just do a search for Acoustic Alchemy. The freebie items are on the display case to your right inside the main entrance. IM me later if you need any help.

Hey,...yes im new.

Yes ive used search. I cannot find any sticky or help on how to upload .wav files or textures? I got a new wall texture from the internet, now how do I get it in-game? Do I just add it to the ?:\secondlife\skins\textures folder and then just copy and use the UUID/name in-game? or do you actually have to connect to a server via FTP program and upload the file.

From inside the SL viewer client.. on the top toolbar.. click File and then your upload option. That should get you started. Ping me in-world if you need any help with the sounds.

Hey, I COULD call on the others if you find it too calm here... ;)

I'm still pondering whether it's worth splitting a four minute song into 10 second bits, paying a load of money and uploading it, and then fiddling the parts together again...doesn't the quality suffer a lot?

No clue havent dealt with that yet. I have heard longer then 10sec sounds/songs blended together and sounds good. I think the quality will suffer if you dont cut your track up exactly right

The problem with chopping a song into 10 bytes is that when you click play the first time, the sound first byte loads into cache (once the system has found it on the asset server), by which time the second byte is loading and can actually merge or worse play out of sequence. By the second time the song is played, this will be quicker and more fluid.

I'm not sure why you want to upload songs into SL.... It is not like there are RL DVD/CD players in SL.. a neater way would be to have a music url controller, host the song(s) on the internet, load the urls (must point directly at the source file, not a http webpage) and stream the song. Unless you are making a standalone 'player' that you simply drop someplace and it plays.
