1) Get a good antivirus program. Run it at all times. Do a full system scan periodically. I run mine once a week.
2) Make sure you have a firewall running. ZoneAlarm is free and works well.
3) Get an anti-spyware program and use it to scan your system periodically for known malware. I also run this once a week. AdAware is a free program.

Search for these 2 free programs. Spybot Search and Destroy, and Adaware. keep them updated and run them frequently. Spybot has an Immunize feature that blocks out many bad sites.

Do you mean ordinary spyware from the internet, or chat spys and so forth in SL?

If it's ordinary spyware then the suggestions above are good advice, if it's SL chat spys then those solutions won't help. There are things you can do to help protect yourself, such as being careful what objects you accept from other people, but it's not something I've ever looked into in much detail. I'm sure others will be along with better advice if that is what you are asking about.

I never considered the OP meant SL spying. Good call.
