I'm a Newbie who's stuck and can't get started....

I joined in September and made an Avatar, then got stuck and gave up.

I can't get into the Public Help Island. I can't get anywhere.

Please someone take pity on me and lead me by the hand for a bit.

I'd like to live on the shore, walk up and down the beach with 2 dogs and a metal detector, and drink coffee in the afternoons with folks who talk about the Meaning Of Life.

I'm not sure what you're asking...are you saying you can't teleport at all? Or do you just need a 'tour guide'?

When you first started did you start off in a small location with 4 main areas and a center section connecting all? There should have been a castle, a volcano, a small city section and another area that had maps etc. If you did do you recall ever seeing small heads up displays that provide you instructions on what to do?

Orientation Island probably didn't look like that in September, Turbo...when I started in August, it was just a meandering path with stations to complete and no HUD.

No, I'm sure it didn't look like that in September. If they are still stuck there though I would suggest trying to click on the 'retry station' signs to see if they can comlete the tasks now.

I'm still not sure what he or she means when they say 'stuck.' It's conceivable that they signed up online and didn't realize they needed to download the viewer application to get in-world...that's happened in the past.

Guess we'll need Philabee to help us help them...

I saw a post in the technical issues part of the forums to the effect that there is some trouble passing the move teat on orientation island.

Who's moving whose teats???

Seriously though, if the OP is still with us, there's a landmark giver in the center hub of the new Orientation Island that gives you a landmark to Help Island. Using that will save you from the broken Orientation Island purgatory.

I guess I'll just keep making a virtual fool of myself until I figure this out. Either that or find a boyfriend under 30. They know things about computers.

Can you recommenc a tour guide and where they are? Be specific. I get lost easily and now I'm virtually lost.

OK, first thing, and possibly a silly question, but have you downloaded the viewer? http://www.secondlife.com/community/downloads.php We've had people comment in the past that they'd been all around the site and couldn't find anything that looked like the pictures they'd seen, not realizing they had to run an entirely separate program to get in-world.

If all else fails join open your search menu and search for "New Residents" group. Join the group and send a group IM asking for help. Someone should be able to get you off OI.

As I was planning to say before I was so rudely interrupted by my job, if you HAVE downloaded the viewer and made it in-world, but somehow got 'lost' from Orientation and Help Islands (due to crashing, accidental teleport, etc), you can complete your basic training at the public versions. Click the Search button at the bottom of your viewer screen, choose the 'Places' tab on the window that pops up, then enter 'Orientation Island Public' and search. Once the search is complete, there will be a button at the bottom center of the window which says 'Teleport'...click it, and away you go.



For some reason, Help Island Public (somewhat more advanced tutorials) is not coming up for me in standard search, but does when I search it from the map. To do this, click Map at the bottom of your viewer which will, oddly enough, bring up the map.



About a third of the way down on the right, there's a search bar, as shown in close up here:



Enter 'Help Island Public' in the bar, click Search, and you should see a red circle appear on your map over Help Island. Click the teleport button at the bottom of the map window and, unless the Island is full, you should be on your way.

You might also notice from the map that Orientation and Help Islands Public are right next to each other, so you could probably just fly (Page Up/directional arrows) from one to the other if you wanted to...aim for the concentration of green dots, as that's where the people (and tutorials) are.
