I don't think that You should be afraid to play with it. Just remember where your old skin is in case you want to change back to it. I don't know if what you purchased are full skins or just attachements. In order to find something that you have attached in your inventory, just type "worn" in search and it will be highlighted if you forget what you put on. If you want to remove it and it is a full skin you have to click on another one and wear that, you just cant remove a skin, you have to replace it. You can't destory yourself too badly, so have fun. There is always someone in the forums to help you out if you have a problem.. Especially in the Resident Answers forum.

Welcome to SL. Don't be scared, remember we were all there once, just look at it all with a sense of humor.

If you wear the item and it appears on you as a box, then you will need to drag the box onto the ground, then click on it and choose "open" and "copy to inventory". Once it's in your inventory then you can wear it.

You can also practice with the things that are already in the Library section of your inventory, there are some complete avatars there and you can mix and match the clothes, hair, skin, eyes etc.

Don't be afraid to ask others for help! There are a lot of very friendly, helpful people who wouldn't mind giving you a hand inworld. If you do run into someone who isn't, don't let that scare you off, keep trying!
