Lost my Edit Menu and Chat Bar

I'm new to SL (a month now) and, while adjusting settings to reduce lag, m managed to now not have my edit menu or chat bar on the screen. I tried Ctrl + P but nothing came up.

Help...anyone?

A friend informed me that I can get to the preferences screen prior to logging into SL.

Was able to do so and everything is now back to normal!
