I have observed, in my time on second life, almost no mentors in certain fields in SL. ESPECIALLY SCRIPTING!!! We don't need scripting "help", we don't wanna pay, we need to be tought! FROM SCRATCH. Hey when I first got into scripting, dam, the wiki thing, was like trying to read a five paragraph essay... in bainary. I have had nice enough friends to help me script and talk me through it and I thank all of them, but freebee mod scripts only get you so far people. Wake up and look out your windows, look down on the ground at all the people noobs and older veterans alike, who want to learn how to script but cant find anyone who gives more than a rats ass about it. (god I am angry today) WE NEED ACTUAL FREE MENTORS THAT ACTUALLY TEACH YOU. I have to admit, Teazerz and a few other have offered scripting calsses and have helped a lot but I hardly see any scripting classes anymore. SO i go back to my original question, what happened to all the mentors?

There certainly are scripting classes every week at more than one venue. But I can tell you right now, that I am not good at teaching basic scripting (ask Doug - He'll confirm it). Debugging and teaching more advanced things, easier.
But me teaching basic scripting is like the LSLwiki written by Leo Tolstoy, I'm afraid. The Wiki does a better job in that respect than I do. |

I agree that we need a few mentors that know each "area" of the main items new residents want to know about such as textures, scripting, building. Unfortunately, there aren't enough of us to go around. Luckily we have areas, such as TeaZers (for example) with willing teachers to show all of us young and old how to do these things.
I myself can put a texture on something, attempt to build, but really stay away from scripting-its mumbo jumbo to me. Sometimes it is hard to find people to cover ALL the areas that new residents want to learn at that moment. |

We all have our area of expertise. Building and scripting are definitely where I excel. However I will point out that teaching someone how to build and teaching someone how to script are *much* different animals. While the building tools and abilities are quite robust, they are also fairly limited and therefore easy to pick up. Learn how to size one object and you've learned how to size them all, for example.
Scripting, however limited it is within SL, is still programming. Coming from a programmers background will help new people get the hang of it, but I'd be hard pressed to find anyone that could spend the time needed to get someone up to speed from scratch. I learned from the Wiki and the forums myself. I've always been more than happy to answer questions and help when I can, and I know a few others who are ready and willing to do the same, although they are not mentors. While scripting is an excellent skill to have, it's also one that is better served to learn after you've made a life within SL. At which point there are a number of residents who are also ready and qualified to guide you into the next phase. |

You want to learn from scratch do you? Well start at one of Salem Penguin's classes on Scripting - The Basics.
Salem is an excellent instructor and has a good understanding of LSL. His classes are on Tuesday Nights I think... I think there are plenty of scripting mentors out there, they are probably just busy with their scripting. ![]() |

A Mentor trying to teach a newcomer how to script is like asking a girl graduating from high school to be the mother of your 3 teenage sons. It can be done, but it is a hell of a lot of work and not really part of the job description.
The classes are an excellent place to start learning. They can give you tips and small projects to learn from. You can also meet people there who are more knowledgeable and may be able to give you the one-on-one attention that this would entail. Welcome to Second Life and I'm glad you want to learn how to script. There is an entire world to learn about out there. |

There are scripting mentors out there, but to teach new people how to script can be a very lengthy process, and there are a lot of scripting classes out there to learn how to script. Also the description of a mentor is:
"Do you like hanging out in the Welcome Area and answering questions? Apply to be a Second Life Mentor! Mentors are focused on helping the newcomer to Second Life. We believe individual help can make all the difference in the early SL experience and Mentors play a critical role in this first step of weaving the community together." (Taken From: https://secondlife.com/community/volunteer.php) People who want to learn how to script well, should take classes. Mentors can teach the very basics but after that you should take some classes on it. |

I been around for almost a year in the mentor group and i very happy in the most part. To me its important too enjoy and help guide people when they need. Its the giving part that makes me stay. Ego is not part of my play, its the giving. |
