Hi, woot mentors... cool...
I think I need one... I don't know for real if I do, but I guess I should ask a mentor that...
so, how does one get a mentor? I would like to learn stuff from someone who has been around longer... building cool stuff that is sellable, for one.. but loads of other things as well.

Jerry, I think most of the mentors hang out at the Welcome Areas, Help Island Public and Orientation Island Public, as well as the actual Help and Orientation Islands. Find one and ask nicely - you can also IM me if you like Don't expect miracles though, the creative industry in SL is very competitive and it's difficult to make money.....

Jerry, the official mentors reading/posting this subforum are more aimed at helping brand-new arrivals in SL in the official entry ports, as the previous poster mentioned. It sounds more like you want a tutor?
Rather than that, how about you try some of the inworld building etc. classes at NCI (New Citizens Inc), and TUI? You can find all the classes being run by them and other folks by using Search - I believe it's the Events tab, select Education in the pulldown. These classes are fun and you may meet someone with whom you can learn as you go!
If you want a faster track to building, go to the Ivory Tower of Prims and do the tutorials there. There are several floors, each focusing on a section of the Build tools ... first floor is basic, then there are floors for flexi, texturing, etc..
And, welcome to SL!
