ive only been a resedent of SL for a month, however, i've learned alot in that time, ive learned to script, build, fight, and invent. i stummbled on the idea of becoming a mentor, because i wasnt to help people learn about SL just like i learned from a mentor.
so my question is, do i have to sign up to be a mentor????

Hi Joker, you must have been a player for at least 2 months to be considered as a Mentor.

You don't have to join any organization to help people, just hang out at areas such as the Ahern Welcome Area or the Waterhead Two Lakes site, and it won't be long till someone asks a question.
Join the Scripters of Second Life group, the Builders of Second Life group, the New Citizen's group and you'll see the group chat which have people asking questions you can answer.
You can hold classes at a number of sites, or just hang at a sandbox till you see someone struggling with making a few simple prims and ask if they want some advice.

Joker Opus As Suezanne says, you can help people without actually becoming a mentor. Being a mentor nowadays is effectively like working for Linden Lab (but without the salary), so if you're into that sort of thing then go for it. However, if you simply want to help people, just offer to help, its much easier that way and hassle-free.

Joker, if you want to be a Mentor go for it. Suezanne is the dean of mentors. She offered you excellent advice. I believe the sign of someone worthy of being a Mentor is the desire to help and give. Continue to help out on your own. However, don’t stop there. Keep track of the people whom you helped. Keep a record of when you helped. When the time comes and you are eligible, send an email to Jeska Linden describing what you did and why you want to be a Mentor. Then be patient. The group is undergoing some changes and seeking to define itself. It may be a while before you are accepted. Just keep helping. The Mentor corps needs people like you. As a group we are the sum total of our membership. Quality people means a quality group. The better we can be as a group the better our Second Life will be. Jen
