I started in 2nd Life this week, and coming from another MMORPG I expected to find Mentors or tutors or some such. Newbie Island is nice and pretty, and has some helpful stuff, but what I really needed was a person to ask my many questions of? Was I just unlucky? I repeatedly asked questions but only one person answered me and she certainly didn't have an official title?

Come over to Hobo Village in Calleta and ask around. Dont worry about titles. But you can look for hobo titles if you want. If you don't see anybody to help, search for Geo Meek, Luna Idler, Orhalla Zander, or me. Or go by Thinkerer Studios to the Grand Calleta Terminal and Rail Museum. You'll see some posters with lamdmarks to places of interest.

I admit I've never actually interacted with a Mentor. I've seen one once, so they aren't a myth.

Well thanks, that's cool. But as a new person I didn't know that.... which is my point really. This virtual environment (not a game) takes a lot of learning and I, and a lot of other newbies - am wandering around looking lost, and nothing happens except some people try to fleece us. In other online envirojnments there are mentors, helpers, etc, waiting at the new people point of entry and available at all times of the world timezones to answer questions patiently. Sometimes they get some kind of reward, sometimes not. Maybe something like that should be set up - it sounds as if SL has expanded a great deal lately, and this would definitely help.

(I actually signed up after hearing from a friend who had tried SL and left - she found no help either but managed to figure out how to fly so she flew around the world until she got fed up of bumping into places she wasn't allowed to access. Hasn't been back since. I don't blame her.)

i know tons of mentors that are on help and orientation islands all the time waiting to help new people, i am also a mentor so if you have any questions feel free to IM me. this is the first game i played that actually has mentors. as to your friend leaving because of bumping into places with ban lines im sorry they left but some people myself at times included have to put up ban lines to get some sort of privacy. i spend a bunch of time on my land building and getting things ready to vendor and i have at least 3 or more newbies drop in from the heavens on me every day some nice some not so nice but i try to help when i can if they are not rude

Hi,

I spent seveal days on Help Island 5. I never saw any mentor like people. Nor did I find any at the entry point infohub I was sent to. I did have the Official Guide book so I wasn't entirely lost.

I also have had my run-ins with no fly/entry zones; which seems a little odd. Why not allow flying and just don't allow landing? Wouldn't that accomplish the desired effect?

I would guess it's a timezone thing then. Are most of your mentor chums in the States? I live in Europe and SL is generally very quiet for me, even in what ought to be really busy places.
Maybe you need a recruitment drive for mentors who can be on line at the "quiet" or "unsociable hours" time of day. Maybe some Euros would be pleased to help.

Makes you wonder....they don`t even know what a debug is
02-27-2007 17:47
I was kicked out of the mentors based on a report of a person ( that has now sold his account ) I felt at that time that person that sold his account was not behind that avie. Even Robin Linden explained that you never know who is behind that avie. Its been a while since the last report on me was filed ( it did not even occur in world ) but more of a hit type apond me to keep me out of the mentors.......... I am always helping and explaing to newbies the ins and out of the game. always explaining so they understand things and where to get information. And I DON`T know what the mentors programs problems these days. You always wants people to share information to new people, but do you know there are mentors that don`t even know how to open a debug menu or even know the correct way to set your UI? More of my sl has been to give to people not take. I really don`t understand the minde sets of Llabs and how they thing 930+ ( most that are not even inworld anymore) are any better what is a ASSUMED on me.

No fly/entry zones and those ban lines
02-28-2007 11:37
Hi Gershom,

I sympathize because the ban lines and no fly zones drive me crazy too. The reason they extend (to my knowledge, to infinite height), is because land owners own the airspace above their land as well. They may have a sky box, home or other things located in the sky, and while not pleasant for us flying or in a boat or plan hitting them, have the right to control access on their property whether located on land or in the sky.

Yes there are Mentors and when 2 months into game i finally saw one and said hello i was ignored while she openly chatted with a guy in a store *sighs* I have also since gone and made a 'tips on new clothes and hair ' box thats on my first land or just im me its full of places with deals for clothes and hair and shoes and tips...the other thing is GET OFF HELP ISLAND dont walk RUNNN ...when I started I had someone here already so I didnt experience it , since though, I have gone to different ones all the time and found them either too darn cliquey which lead to rudeness or worse as someone said lost people flying around (not all mind you as there are some independant ones that are very very helpful)...Help island gives the impression that its all about Guns and Pranks and that is why many New Residents come into world further into :) and use weapons on people or think there is no issue with walking around a store naked..its a shame also that many help landing areas seem to be rife with escorts and what not, as fleecing was mentioned I've seen escorts and dancers standing in wait of some New Resident that might have just signed up as a prem so have some money :( anyway I hope that your friend returns maybe , even though she started first, you can learn enough to bring her back :o) make yourself 'Her Mentor"

There really ought to be assigned mentors/helpers in the infohubs on a semi-regular basis since that's where new people end up after orientation island. I've never seen a mentor or greeter any place but the Help Islands (I did seek out one there and found her to be extremely helpful). I live at the Hobo Infohub in Calleta, and our group tries to hang around and be helpful but we get very overwhelmed, especially on the weekends.

I am a mentor and sadly there are times I have ignored people who say hi to me, so it could have been me who igored you and if it was I am sorry.

See I do not always know someone is talking to me, so I presume they are talking to someone else, unless they say my name or even Rha or heck even an R, to show they are addressing me

I try to include names when I can so as to make sure the person I am speaking to, knows I am speaking to them.

So just a tip to people, use a person's name when addressing them hehe

as for being on the new player areas of help island and orientation island, I try to be, mostly though when I go there, no one is there.

Give me a shout anytime you want, I will reply when I am on, or if it goes to my mail I will reply when I get on.

I too am a mentor. There are around 1000 of us. On any given day over 30,000 new people join. We are all volunteers and do not get paid or have assignments. Like most mentors, I have a SL life. I teach clothes making and sell clothes. I have friends with whom I like to hang.

I try to spend time mentoring at least once a week. This means unfortunately that there will often be times when no one is available to help new residents. This is discussed at every monthly mentor meeting. No one likes it.

Sadly, I don’t see it changing. We are way down on the todo lists of Linden lab.

There were no mentors to be seen when I joined, either. I've asked upwards of 50 people if they've ever seen one and they've all said no. I've only ever seen one person wearing a Mentor tag.

The ridiculous thing is, I applied to be a Greeter back in December and my application was changed to Mentor about a month later when Greeters were dropped ... I'm still "under consideration".

Shakeshead.....Why is it that i hear more and more of these types pf remarks? Where are they do they help? What makes me laugh is I had one mentor IM me ans ask me how to bring up the client ( of debut menu ).Sigh yea Amber Linden I not good enough tto be a mentor am I.......... So So typle of the Lindens and their Who you know who gets you in the groups these day.........If you have money or land to give LLabs You bound to be a linden faster then a Cat that catch a mouse.

I done with this issue now. Lets hope people get the help they need indeed of having The leaders in this group(s). Since they keep putting in people that are kissers then real useful mentors........Such is life in these helper groups.I sure don`t want to be a newbie in this mess these days.

( a once useful mentor for a long time , but now being told i nolonger userful ) You figure this out what they are doing.

i dont wear my mentor tag
i dont hang out at orientation island

but i help alot of new people everywhere im at

sometimes i might ignore people if its hard to tell who they are talking to

i help when i can all over the place, hand out tips teach people how to find things etc.

i know it sucks but sometimes people just have to look around to find helpful people and sometimes they just need to read and learn some things on their own
