Mentor but not Mentor?

I know you're all going to say "Go away, you've been registered a week"...

Well, yes, I have been registered a week but I want ways to help people, and I would LOVE to be a Mentor sometime in the future, but I know that will be an impossibility because it happens the 2 Mentor Meetings are at 2am (sleep) and 10am (school) for me, so that is out of the question.

However, I wanted to know if there's a way for me to help out around the Help Islands without being an Actual Mentor. When I joined, My Mentor inspired me to be around there. She was SO much help when I needed it most.

Could anybody help me with this? Basically I want to be a Helper in the Help Islands but not a Mentor because I can't keep up with the requirements of being one :(

Thankyou

Thank you Jayson for wanting to help. We need and want people such as yourself in the Mentor Group. Yes, you do have to have been around for at least two months. However, you can help others right now.

Unfortunately, you can not go to Help Island. Only official Greeter’s, Mentors and Live Helpers are allowed back on the Island. This was done to stop griefers from returning to the island to cause havoc. If a volunteer were to cause havoc, he or she could be removed from the access list.

You can help out in many other areas. Help Island isn’t the only place where new people enter the world of SL. There are several welcome areas and information hubs that are also used. Go there and offer to help. Better, find a Mentor or Greeter working the area and ask to observe and learn.

You will pick up a lot by watching and listening to a mentor answer questions. Most Mentors will be happy to have someone to help. Especially, when the questions start coming for several people at once. Most Mentor and Greeters have clothing, info cards and other freebies that they offer to new people. They will often give you a copyable copy of the folder to use.

If you wish, IM me and the next time I am in the game I will contact you and, we can go somewhere together. However, I won’t be around much this week. I have a final exam in a grad course I have been taking this summer.

Lastly, you do not need to attend the Mentor meeting to be a Mentor or Greeter. They are not mandatary.

Good luck and best to you,

Jen

Thankyou for Replying :)

Thankyou for all that information :) I'm so glad it's actually possible to become a Mentor with my time-problems... Sometimes it's annoying being Australian xD

When I joined and checked out the Game and all of the links I could click, I knew that I wanted to work my way up to becoming a SL Mentor, Intructor and Businessman... I could help people in so many ways, like offering "Starter Homes" cheaper than many other Rentals once I aquire a lot of property.

I will be around on SL until I or it am taking off the net... So, plenty of time to earn some money, get a membership and L$ and start aquiring property and do what I do best... Help people :)

I'll checkout the welcome hubs next time I'm in the game (This isn't the computer that SL works on :()

I might take you up on that offer but I'll leave it for at least a few days... I'm kind of online/offline at the moment too... Not spending more than 10 minutes at a time in game... You would probably know what it's like when you have those days xD;

Just one more Question... Could you list some of the hubs and places where Mentors generally are because I'll bet you I wont be able to find them myself xD;

Thankyou

I'm waiting for approval on my mentor application, too, so I know how you feel :)

If you want to help right away, you can go to one of the welcome areas in Ahern or Waterhead. There are lots of confused new residents in need of help :) Another good place would be New Citizens Plaza in Kuula sim. I'd be happy to see you there :)

IM me in-world if you have any more questions :)

You can try these people in the meantime...

It is awesome you want to help out new people.
While waiting for Mentor status and in between helping a SL Mentor or greeter you can also check out NCI. New Citizens Inc has a helper program as well and is quite easily joined. I believe you just search for the group and join it.
Yadni's junk yard has a newbie helping group as well. I only mention these two because they are the only ones I have helped out in and can vouche for. I am sure there are others out there, but these are a couple leads of ya.
Good luck and welcome to SL.

Besides the ones already listed here are some of the offical entry points. Anyone of them may or may not have new residents showing up at a given time. Linden Labs trys to rotate them, so as not to overload a given area.

The last two bear mention. Ahern and Waterhead are offical Welcome Areas. A lot of people often conjugate there and sometimes trouble happens. Some of the more vocal residents consider anyone helping out to be less than, their idea of what a resident should be. This is especially true of Mentors and Greeters. Just be prepared to deal with their antics.

Another good place to help and get help is the Shelter. (the Shelter, Isabel (63, 231)) It is set up to help new people. It is not as educational as New citizens and Teazer's but offers games, dancing and prize money. You will often see new people helping other new people at the Shelter.

Mirmare Plaza , Miramare (2, 40, 24)

Mahulu Infohub - Mahulu (58, 193, 85)

Pooley (250, 7, 49)

It CAN be, but it's also annoying... All of my friends are generally online around 10am my time which is when I'm in school (HSC) and around 11pm when I'm in bed xD

HSC as in Hampden-Sydney College? The time zone thing is a real problem. I've got a bunch of friends i only ever seen when i'm an insomniac.

I have an alt in help island since a few weeks now.
I'm french and help the french newbie that don't understand (or poorly) the english langage.
I help the english one too... everybody.

Some basic helping, a few building course, i explain how SL can be wonderfull and there is something else than club and casino (and i'm a casino owner ...). I talk with everybody, and mentor too.

i own 8 private island, i'm hosting the biggest french community in my islands.

I have a whole "light" island dedicated to french newbie (free house/hosting)

I'm chief redactor of the SL section in a HUGE multi-mmorpg french portal.

I applied to live help around 11/2004 and was refused ... 4 month later (maybe more).

When mentor in help island told me i should apply to mentor, i did. Explaining that my alt was spending time in help island, etc etc ...
Refused too...

So... my alt is mentor... but not mentor... that's sad :(
I could help more of my main was mentor, because i can't always log my alt... business IM keep me busy.

I had no explanation, maybe LL is just not interested in the french community (which is growing a lot since we have thoses islands and the SL portal open)

There could be a bunch of reasons why you were refused to be a Mentor. Don't Jump to the conclusion that Linden Labs doesn't want French Mentors, I'm sure they'd love multi-cultural Mentors to help more people who cannot speak English as well as many of us.

So, basically, there should be another reason. Have any of your accounts ever been suspended/banned? If so, that's it. I'm not trying to imply you're a bad person, accidents happen, people make mistakes. Maybe you've made a mistake somewhere which has stayed on your record and so you've been refused for Live Help and Mentoring.

I don't jump on this excuse :)
I don't really think LL reject the french community too :D

Maybe you could try contacting a Linden (like Jeska) to ask why you've been refused?
