Welcome to Second Life! What a great post you have here... and I hope you find folks to help you soon. There is a Mentor Group in Second Life (SL). Look for Travis Lambert. I believe he is a Mentor and I can attest to his being the most helpful puppy I know. Look also for Brace Coral. She is working hard on helping new players get their feet on the ground in SL. You may also wish to check 'Live Help' from the game menu. It is a chat room where your questions can be answered. Finally, don't forget to search the forums here. There is a trove of information to read and many guides and examples for the finding. Again, welcome to SL and best wishes for your efforts here.

I am not sure DarkFire was really intending to be looking for a genuine member of the official Mentor group but might have been using the word in the general sense of a teacher, so moving his post from General to the Mentor's forum might actually be working against his interests by reducing the number of people who read the message.
At any rate, the way to find a member of the Mentor group inworld is to use the Find button, Groups tab, and search for the phrase "Second Life Mentor" and check the member list. From that list you can get profiles of the members and send instant messages to each one that looks promising.
I'm in the Mentor group, and willing to answer IMs with questions.

Hi DarkFire Gall!
The Sojourner has some tutorials as well as a willingness to help you in building. Plus, she has a network of friends who may be able to help in your other areas of interest. Give her an IM and see what she can do. She is a Mentor as well.
