Based upon feedback both here and in-world, below are the 1.0 version of the Mentor Principles, I hope to have these dropped on all of the Mentors shortly.
Mentor Principles 1.0
We believe the first connection can make all the difference in the early Second Life experience. By hanging out on Help Island, the Welcome Areas, Infohubs and other spaces in-world answering questions and handing out information, you provide a crucial step in weaving the Second Life community together.
When you put your Mentor title on, you are representing the Second Life volunteers as a whole and the Mentor group in particular. Mentors embody all of the best things available in the Second Life community; keeping the following Principles in mind will empower you and your fellow Mentors to continue creating an even better Second Life for all.
Community Be inclusive, active, and encouraging. Demonstrate and communicate tolerance, respect and civility to all Residents. Promote a sense of community and foster the formation and growth of communities in Second Life, and with your fellow volunteers.
Education Be helpful, answer questions. Communicate with your fellow Residents. Turn data into useful, relevant information. Provide information, not misinformation. Show other Residents how and when to report abuse. Learn from each other!
Communication Be informed and informative. Check into the Volunteer HQ in Tenera (208, 100, 69), keep up with in-world bulletins and announcements. Maintain good communication with your fellow volunteers and don't be afraid to share information. This includes using the mentor group channel for good, not evil. Come to the Mentor group meetings.
Attitude Be positive, courteous, professional and pleasant. Smile. Don't be afraid to ask for help when you need it. Be welcoming, fun, and helpful.
Integrity Be reliable. Do your best to represent the community in a positive way. Maintain PG standards of appearance and manners when wearing the Mentor tag. Live your Second Life by the Community Standards as a shining example to others.
Tolerance Be accepting of other nationalities, cultures and subcultures. Inspire curiosity, open-mindedness, and let the diversity of Second Life be your guide as you help fellow Residents.
Disregard for the below principles will result in a warning and repeated disregard may result in the loss of your Mentor status. Please note that all volunteers must keep and maintain a clean Linden Rapsheet (no warnings or suspensions). Volunteer status will be checked on a quarterly basis.

From: someone Perfect guidelines in all regards. Or, depending upon your perspective, ranging from tautological (it is good to be good) to wholly vacuous "Turn data into useful, relevant information" to the incomprehensible "[use] the mentor group channel for good, not evil". The bit I like best is how toothy they are: Disregard for the below principles will result in a warning and repeated disregard may result in the loss of your Mentor status. ... Volunteer status will be checked on a quarterly basis. Looks like what you do when the boss says "get some guidelines written" but neither you nor your boss knows what that should actually mean. I'm guessing that this was the response to the recent Mentor gunning down newbies which will allow HeadUpTheirPosterior Lab to say "shooting newbies was bad, thus your volunteer status may be revoked if you continue" instead of unilateral revocation.

Another principle.

Less is more. Do not use the Mentor IM channels for unnecessary banter. Take it to a private channel.

From: Marc3469 Nichols The mentor program is actually closed untill the backlog of new applications is cleared. The new program is set to be re-structured to. New mentor applications were closed sometime in June 2008 due to a backlog of new applicants. That backlog was cleared in or about late August 2008, according to a VTeam blog post made by George Linden at that time. In that same blog, he mentioned that applications would probably be reopened once the Mentor Renewal process was completed in October 2008. After that date came and went, it was then reported in the blog that applications might be reopened in January 2009. In early December, it was reported that applications would not be reopened in January 2009 either due to the ongoing restructuring of the mentor/greeter program. At this time, there is no further information currently available on either the wiki or blog pages regarding new mentor applications.
