This is a just in case you don't know....

The Mentor Q & A group is going to be disbanded with the rearrangements currently underway of the volunteer program... I don't know about anyone else but I do feel this is an incorrect decision with no substitute being offered but to look at the rules of the mentor channel.... we all know how well that goes don't we?

That's not the only change.

Quite a few mentor subgroups (Greeter, Mentor Buddy, Instructor) are being discontinued. The Greeters will be replaced by a new Greeter subgroup.

There will be new guidelines for use of the Mentor group chat, which hopefully will let it take up the slack of the Q&A group.

This isn't really a bad move, IMO. It was getting where a significant fraction of one's group memberships could be eaten up by mentoring activities, if one was active in the role.

Considering the reduced scale of the Mentor group, I can see how idle chit-chat has been less of a problem. Q&A has been so rarely used that it's practically hardly a major loss in my limited point of view. But, I guess that does remove one of the opportunities for ejected Mentors to continue to group chat with others. (>_<;)

I wonder about the status of the more recently added alt-group Volunteer Live Help. For my online time, I think I've only had the opportunity to see one or two queries for help there. How do we make people less afraid to ask "dumb" questions? (=_=)

/me goes back to hovering around welcome areas with "MorallyReprehensible" floating over her head... That tag sure gets attention. Oddly... I find people see me as more welcome to asking for help when I have a screwball tag like that on. (^_^)y

Though.... The week I wore "だめ人間" turned into a lost-in-translation nightmare. (>_<;)

Program Changes: Reminder and Tentative Schedule
Posted on November 6, 2008 by george

Hello Mentors!

In the interest of focus, the program has gone through many changes in the last couple of months. There have been some new project options relating to gestures, testing at infohubs, and Mentor Inventions. (The latter is due for a wrap up blog post any day now–visit the convention space at SLVEC!) :) There are plans in the works for a specialized Greeters group focused on helping at new resident locations. Monthly meetings, office hours, and occasional one-on-ones, combined with Linden Lab’s prioritizing support for new residents, have helped us steer in this journey.

The purpose of this post is to reiterate some changes that will occur in the month of November, which for many will be unnoticable. Below are listed some components of the program that will need to scale back as other efforts are ramped up.

* Coaches Role - The role, not the act of Coaching, is being disbanded.
WHY: Every Mentor, regardless of title, is able to provide classes in a structured setting. Mentors will still be welcome to make use of the space at Tenera for hosting classes, and we are happy to post notices at the blog regarding the Week of Learning project. :) The title doesn’t make the teacher; the teaching makes a teacher!
* Buddies Role - The role, not the act of Buddying, is being disbanded.
WHY: Mentors by default are helpful! That is one of the joys of being part of this community. In a way, we’re all Buddies to one another. Similar yet different, Apprentice Buddies put in lots of time in providing high quality shadowing experience to new volunteers - this data is recorded and in the event that shadowing makes a return at the Mentoring level, it will be you specifically we contact for input and considerations!
* Greeters Role - The role, not the act of Greeting, is being disbanded.
WHY: To make room for the upcoming specialized Greeters group!
* Mentor Q&A Group - The Second Life Mentor Q&A group is being disbanded.
WHY: One of the thoughtful concerns in making the Greeters group is the 25 group limit. One less group should help free up a slot for many. We are focusing on tailoring the Second Life Mentor chat guidelines to reflect the absence of the Second Life Mentor Q&A group and will be providing the Greeter group with its own set of guidelines. The Second Life Mentor Q&A group will not be removed until the guidelines changes are decided upon; please do attend VTeam meetings to add your input on suitable chat guidelines for the Second Life Mentor and Second Life Greeter groups.
* Apprentice Group - The Second Life Mentor Apprentice group is being disbanded.
WHY: As the entry requirements of the Second Life Mentor group go through progressive iterations, a holistic look at the processes already in place have been considered. At this time, the Apprentice group in its current form is not needed while we take a bottom up approach to our considerations.

The result of these changes will lead to greater focus and strength in the following:

* Linguists & Scribes - Community Translation efforts, and revamping of the wiki!
* Second Life Greeters - Mentors with an edge for helping new residents!
* Entry Requirements - Raising the bar to entry of official Linden Lab volunteer groups with revamped methods, considering all angles from bottom up. This includes training and testing.

Overall, the process of trimming the group to its core functional components that we can support should have visible effects on how the Second Life Mentor group is managed. We’d like to remind you that in the coming months, our major support will be to help the Second Life Greeter group formalize. This does not put freelance volunteers who do not fit into the above categories out of volunteer opportunities; while roles and groups are being disbanded, you may volunteer for the Second Life Mentor group as you had done before without concern.

Thank you very much for following along! Please stop by our office hours for any questions or considerations!

The numbers may be reduced but there will still be those (the loudest shouters usually) who don't wish to receive the regular chatter that goes on in Q & A. I don't know where the idea comes from that it was rarely used because in my experience (my timezone being not US) it was quite regularly in use with good outcomes for everyone.
