See what happened to your question, JonC?
Yes, nothing.

There is no answer.

We are waiting since June 2008 ... 9 months now ... to get a chance to become a mentor or to get back into the mentor group, but nothing happened. There is a website for applications, but since June it says:

From: someone
In our continuing effort to make the Second Life Volunteer program the finest in Second Life, we have adopted new processing steps for Apprentice mentors to advance from Apprentice to full Mentor. Recently, our application processing rate has dropped to accommodate these changes. Rather than let the application list grow at its present pace and force residents who desire to participate in the Volunteer program to wait weeks if not months to hear from us, we have decided to stop accepting applications until we have processed the list of residents currently in the pipeline. Thank you for your patience.

So, as we read, there IS continuing effort, but the volunteer website still informs to read about the renewal process (which was in August), the apprentice mentor plans are no longer discussed and ...

Rather than letting us wait for weeks or even months to hear from them, as they promise ... they decided to let us wait 9 months (and we will have to wait longer).

So many highly motivated former mentors (who missed the renewal for some good reasons like vacancy, hospital, moving, ISP-problems etc.) still stand outside the doors and don't get resonses and don't hear from the Lindens and there is not even a little hint, that the applications might be opened in the future.

I really love the Lindens for the great virtual world they gave us, but I do not understand how much they ignore motivated residents, how much they ignore the ability to do responses and how much they ignore the ability to communicate.

So your question: "How do I become a mentor or greeter?"

must be answered:

No way!

Maybe next year or so ...

All of the people that used to be greeters were forced to join the Mentor Group to remain an official volunteer when they shut down the greeter group. Then the Lindens complained the Mentor group had too many people in it. Then someone decided to re-create the greeter group again. But former greeters were not allowed to become greeters again.

And then instead of sending a e-mail to everyone in the group to see if they wanted to continue being a volunteer (or posting in this SL Mentor thread) They sent out group notices that got capped and never reached the e-mail of hundreds of volunteers and posted it in the SL Wiki(?) and the un-advertised Volunteer blog.

Chaos and bedlam, hurt feelings and then the next set of Lindens take over the volunteer project and then dead silence.

I believe that it's also worth mentioning that it was recently brought to the attention of the Lindens that the 9-month old message on the SL Volunteer website (quoted above in Danziel's earlier post)is seriously out-of-date and possibly misleading to any residents who might be interested in applying to be a Mentor anytime in the foreseeable future. The message is also outdated by virtue of the fact that it refers to a 'pipeline of applicants" that, in fact, ceased to exist in August 2008. Despite all of this being brought to light and acknowledged, the message on that site continues to appear, unaltered in any way.

I agree.
