The volunteer mailing list has a great deal of "hi I'm a mentor now" messages.

Please let's not clog up the forums with hundreds or thousands of such messages.

Really! There is certainly no greater contributor to the ills in our world than people making an announcement of something important to them.

Thanks for starting a thread encouraging people to not start threads.

Yes, we must save this valuable forum space for complaining about lag, griefers, banlines, updates, late stipends, relationships/cheating, content theft, etc. etc. etc...

We don't want to waste our time reading anyone's GOOD news. What were they thinking, to post something here that made them happy that they wanted to share with us? What nerve!

Valium, anyone? :p

Actually the Linden email that new mentors receive suggests that they not only sign up for the mailing list, but that they send an introductory post.

SuezanneC,

I didn't initally write the post you're referring to in this forum. It started in Resident Answers, because I wanted to pass the happy news on to my friends there. The ResMod moved it over here.

Anyway, after seeing just how MANY new Mantors are entering the system right about now, I'm forced to agree with you. If we ALL shout for joy, it's going to be a real crowded place around here for a bit.

I'll tell you what. I'll delete my post, if you'll delete yours. K?

Actually, having names of mentors is useful. I'm not an "official" mentor, but I get a lot of new people with questions. Most, I can answer, but it would be good to refer them to a real mentor if I don't know the answer.

Quite true, LL encourages people to post so an introduction "post" so this thread is completely pointless.

LL encourages new mentors to make a post about themselves. Plus, its good to here what type of mentors we get.

Is it nessisary to post 3 times in reply? You can quote more than one person in one post.

Can you provide a complete exact quote of that message?

That is refering to posting in the mailing list. This is not the mailing list.

There are mentor names on the wiki.

I'm sorry? I thought this topic was about mentors introducing themselves in the mailing list.. Am I wrong? Or did I misunderstand something?

I'll delete my post, if you'll delete yours. K?

One can't actually delete the initial post of a thread; only posts after the first post in a thread can be deleted. One can delete the content of an initial post, thus leaving responses with no referrent, or as generally happens, complete quotations of what one deleted, or partial quotations, or misleading paraphrases. ("No spelling error or poor choice of words goes unquoted.";)

A person that gets accepted into the Mentor group and wants to make it known here could create a signature that says something like

"On the 43rd day of June, 2007, I, FirstName Avatar, was accepted into the SL Mentors. Woot! Woot! If you have a question about how to use Second Life, feel free to IM me inworld or send me a forum PM!."

Then they could look through the forums for an unanswered question that they don't already know the answer to. Then they could use the wiki, the knowlege base, and Jira, Google, etc. to find the answer, thus learning something in the process of answering someone else's question, which enables them to be a more effective teacher and helper.

In the answer they could say something "This is the first post I've answered since I became a Mentor. I hope this reply and my future replies enhance your enjoyment of the Second Life virtual world. Now, about that box on your hand...."

I'm so tempted to do just that and see how many people it annoys :p

I'd rather them post it on the forums (where I'm not forced to see them, then on the mailing list where I have to get them in my filtered folder for sl volunteers mail.

No one is forced to see the mailing list.

One can read the messages on the web.

This view that you get at this url, if you are logged in, might be preferable to reading them in an email client.

To add to this, it also states (about the mailing list) in the email sent when you're approved:

Please sign yourself up for the Second Life Volunteers mailing list right away. We use this list to share important information with all the Volunteers. It is also a place for you to communicate with other active Volunteers to ask questions and share ideas. Be sure to introduce yourself too!

And yes, this is a subtle way of hinting that I am now an Apprentice Mentor... or will be once I have a working home computer again :(
