Appropriate Dress/Behaviour in help island

I have only been to help island a couple of times, but I have been surprised by the things which some mentors think are appropriate to wear and do there.

I should have thought that Help island was there to try to make the induction into the world of SL a little gentler and less traumatic than suddenly haveing to deal with the wide variety of SL avatars that are often to be found at the welcome points.

Today however. I arrived to find a mentor dressed in fishnet which appeared to expose her nipples, with a safety pin through one breast and edward scissorhands type scissors in each hand.

In general I have no problem with anyone looking however they like and wearing whatever they like assuming it is appropriate to the rating of the place they are in. But I do think there is a special case to be made for mentors trying not to look too extreme and scary when they are on help island.

I did ask the other mentor whether she scared the new residents, and she said no, they tended to ignore her appearance. I wouldn't have rated it as PG, however.

I would have posted a photograph, but I think that might contravene forum rules, so I have not.

You can and should file an abuse report when circumstances indicate it. Also you can send a personal forum message to Jeska Linden or send an email to jeska@lindenlab.com.

Well, Help Island is PG, however, sometimes it's not easy to draw the line. I understand your concerns, though. Let's just say that I wouldn't be feeling too easy about meeting someone coming just from the wildest BDSM furry vampire party to greet me — no matter if, technically, no "nudity" was displayed, and the welcoming was warm and heartfelt.

But then again, I've heard people commenting on seeing my ankles on a long dress, and telling me how sexy that looked *blushes*. Is there anything as a "sensible dress" these days? It's so hard to say. I guess that's why Travis always was a dog in SL — at least, that way, nobody can accuse him of not being "properly" dressed.

Lately I've been sticking to jeans and a top at the HI because of those reasons, and for the ones that know me, I'm quite a conservative person in my dressing (both in SL and iRL...). Still, one never knows the mindset of the persons you're going to meet at the HI, and what they expect to find there!

I was just at Help Island and didn't see any inappropriate dress but then again I haven't been there enough to see anything but what I did see is that it looks like a junkyard! A mentor was even building a huge ugly orange structure!

Does anything go on Help Island? I mean can I build a 100000 meter high purple tower with spinning signs and shooting particles?

LOL Susie — well, this is the "beta version" of Help Island, and nothing more than a big sandbox where most things stay there from one day to the other. There are no "community standards" on the Help Sandbox — I mean Island :D — but some people, with infinite patience, have started to give it a "better look" here and there.

We'll have to wait for the New And Improved Help Sandbox 1.0, which, according to Jeska, is supposed to be the next best thing since sliced bread, and at the finishing stages. Still, the current Help Island is really a very, very positive experiment so far — I mean it. Anything that improves it even further can only be a Good Thing.

Hopefully it will feature an auto-returning sandbox as well :)

For some reason whenever I go to the Help Island I see (female) mentors in long dresses with long sleeves and high necks.

It's about as non-hoochie as you can get; hell, I felt a bit exposed in my miniskirt!

As far as dress code -- I figure as long as you've got a top and bottom that covers the important bits you're all right. There are going to be naked newbies wandering around anyway soon enough.

Awww c'mon...most of SL looks like a junkyard :D

Seriously, Tateru and I have been decorating the island because we can't stand looking at all that barren space and trying to tell people how cool mainland SL is when all the have to gauge by is a telehub, a marginally appealing house and a sandbox full of "Mentor Art". Personally, I kinda think HI should be a funky, creative place that showcases all the amazing things that SL is.

Another benifit to all the "Mentor Art" is that it shows newbies that anyone can build and make things in SL. Sure it's a mess and one person's ugly is another person's creative expression, but isn't that why we are all here? I have a feeling that a sanitized, tidy HI is going to become boring for us fairly quickly and we will start spending less time there. Speaking of which, does anyone know where I can find one of those flying toilets?

LESS time?! You mean instead of three people standing around there will be one?

By golly Lo you won't see me there in a long dress! I wear my 8 inch miniskirts there just like I do everywhere. :)

LOL it's not that bad :) I've seen up to 12 Mentors and LHers around — and only 2 newbies to take care of :)

Certainly, there are times that nobody is around — newbies tend to help each other in those cases.

I've also had a "temporary" idea. What about having a simple script inside the Mentor Row frames that, when touched, will IM that Mentor? Or one of these "online status indicators" to show who is currently online, so people can IM them?

I know this all will be obsolete very soon with the new Help Island, but in the mean time, this might help newbies to get someone to attend...

Just my L$ 0.02 :)

Flying toilets sounds like the work of Siggy Romulus?
