I do an orientation for those that want it (not many). Not a formal class. More an on-the-job thing. A few wonderful folks help me out with that. I'm not aware of anything else.

Should you even be a volunteer yet if you don't know the stuff? o.O

Well, you don't have to know anything to be one. As long as you can find the web-page.

No, to be a volunteer you need to know the basics atleast. You can't have a noob volunteer. That defeats the purpose of a mentor (being someone to help other people with THEIR problems) when the noob volunteer would have problems themselves. And yes, we all have problems but. Noobs always ask more before trying it out themselves.

I think the issue is that being a mentor doesn't make one a jack of all trades.

A mentor may know the exact location of everything in SL, doesn't mean they know anything about scripting or building.

Actually, to be a Mentor, you need to have an account for 60 days - whether or not you have ever logged in to it, then you need to click on the Volunteer button on the website, and sit back and wait for it to be processed.

Maybe there should be other criteria, but there aren't. So I would say that Tateru & Co do a great job by volunteering one step further and offering help and advice to the other volunteers.

I still learn somthing new most days in SL, and yet I am already an experienced builder and scripter, and have helped many new residents with both these skills, over extended periods after they arrive in world.

Thank you Bitzer. Afer 60 days of playing on second life, you need to know SOMETHING. No noobs can be a mentor or anything, because they won't know anything.

Being a volunteer is also about having the people skills to help others.... even those you may not think need it

Its about helping everyone, including our own group.

Everyone has skills to pass on.
Everyone has things to learn.

People skills are just as important as knowledge, so critising someone for wanting to expand on thier knowledge is not really helpful now is it?

We're here to help eachother as well as residents...

...remember that.

If you're going to quote me, could you try to at lease leave some shred of my meaning in tact, please?

The point I made was that you did NOT need to know anything whatsoever, and that there is no testing or checking in place. The account needs to exist for 60 days, not be used for 60 days.

I know a lot about SL already, and I'm still learning.

Mentors have come to me with questions, and I've stood and listened and learned from others as they were explaining stuff to new citizens.

I have also (sadly) heard some mentors quoting totally incorrect information to people :(

IMHO training is a GOOD thing - I don't believe that anyone in SL knows everything about it - not even the coding team who are involved in writing it!

Bitzer and Jayjay are correct.

Some of our mentors don't actually know what a Second Life Mentor is, or does.

We need to help each-other, so we can help others. Nobody, old, new, volunteer or Linden Lab staffer is exempt from our assistance.

Okay, unless they violate the TOS/CS, anyway.
