Tao Update and a FAQ!
Posted on December 8, 2008 by george

Starting off the week with two quick announcements for you, rockstar volunteers!

Changes, changes!

First, there are some progressive changes to the Tao of Volunteers. You will notice in particular there is a new Volunteer Awareness category: Stay Informed! We now ask more explicitly that all residents who are a part of the Linden Lab volunteer program follow along with program developments and continue in efforts to become more knowledgeable residents.

Next, we have put together an FAQ on recent and upcoming changes to the Linden Lab volunteer program. This FAQ will be updated with answers to commonly asked questions about the volunteer program. With your help, we will flesh this wiki article out over time.

Note: the FAQ is at http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Volunteer_Program_Changes_FAQ
The revised TAO is at http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Tao_of_Volunteers

I was trying to repost the contents of the FAQ and TAO but the forums are not letting me. Here's one chunk I can get to post that is new to me.

Volunteer Awareness

Stay Informed

Each Volunteer is responsible for reading notices and guidelines. The Volunteer Program is second to none and because of this it grows and changes as the world of Second Life evolves. The VTeam in its effort to keep Volunteers informed have setup the Volunteer Portal to be our most up to the minute method of keeping Volunteers informed of any changes that will directly impact Volunteers. It further contains guidelines, how-to guides and information directly related to enhancing your mentoring skills.

Do other people get notices from the mentor group? I thought I saw a bunch in the group info pop-up the other night but I've never gotten notification of one. Yes, I know about the checkbox to receive notices and am fairly sure it's checked..

I'm confused ... I thought companies could not give us specific direction (like telling us to read notices) as that makes us employees? Did LL get the law to change for them?

If not: we want our paychecks!!!!!!!!!!!!

We are volunteers. Specif instruction borders on how you define an employee.

So if they said, for example, to not take guns to help island and start shooting newbies, that'd be (near) grounds for them having to pay us?

The difference is one thing is setting a concrete rule (to be a volunteer you must read notices) the other is setting a behavioural standard (to be a volunteer you can't act like a griefer). It gets into a legal grey area and LL is dangerously close to the side where volunteers are de facto (and de juris) employees.
