I skipped orientation island when I joined, went straight to the mainland to be shown round by a friend. Anyway, I created an alt account the other day and decided to see what I had missed.
The main thing that struck me was the section introducing LSL. A couple of notecards and lots of scripted demo objects. Why are the demo objects not copyable? Wouldn't the best way to introduce someone to LSL be to give them a working object and show them how to tinker with its ticker.
IMO, The current demo objects need to be replaced with ones that demonstrate particular principals, they need to be 'take a copy' with full modify permissions. There is no reason whey they cannot be as 'pretty' as the stuff thats there now and 'just for show'.
(I am willing to put my time where my mouth is with this, but not on my own)

I'd be happy to do example scripts, commented for educational purposes, that demonstrate some basic functions. What's actually on the island though? I certainly can't remember, all I remember is the beachball and the parrot.

Ninjafoo – What a nice offer. Have you considered being a mentor or greeter? We could use someone like you. I spend a fair amount of time on Help Island and the various Orientation Islands. I often just stand there and watch the new people being spawned. Then like helpless new born infants, they struggle to figure out Second Life. Most of them don’t even notice me. I don’t want to discourage your helpfulness. The reality is however, I don’t think many people would take advantage of your “freebies” unless it was a demonstration station designed to teach them how to “take/buy” something. My experience is that most new borns are struggling to walk, and understand how to change their appearance. I watch people take 30 minutes on their Avatar’s appearance then go through the rest of OI in one minute. Jen

Oh yes, I am under no illusions about how much use the objects will get while the newbie is on the Island. But if they show an interest in scripting they can take a selection of things away with them. And being able to pop it open later and find clear, well documented script will really help them hit the ground running.

Orientation Island? Or Help Island? I think we're talking Help Island.
Actually most of the scripts were viewable (I know, because they're mine), but apparently no longer are, after having had their ownership changed to Governor Linden during a maintenance phase earlier this year. It's somewhere on the fix list.

Help Island or orientation island?

If you meant the Pier with the question marks, the objects are not all "public". It would be up to the individual creators of each one to offer a copyable version.
We all "stone souped" the objects including some that where purchased.
It's arguable that such a display should not be built with anything but "open source" objects, but that takes time to build and this was our first attempt.
In the future the uncopy-able objects may be replaced with copy-able ones.
The object I personally added was the Conway Life, black and white tiles. I'd not consider making it copyable at this time as it is too many prim to allow new residents to inadvertently rez several copies of it.
What did you think of the cards? Did they help?

I think a lot of the items there are meant to show what you CAN DO, but there could be a section for scripts for people that want to see scripts, such as llSetText, llSay and things like that, I have many scripts that I could put into the "fund"

There are free scripts in the Freebie Store. I picked up a set but have never looked at them. Jen
