Tateru Nino: Thankyou all for coming, dears. The rules are: Tat is the chair. Wait for your turn to speak, and respect each-other enough to let them finish. If we take it in turns, we all get a chance.
Tateru Nino: If Tat tells you to hush or pipe down, please do. Nothing personal. DogaYonv Sleestak: thanks that did it Tateru Nino: Order of the agenda is notices and news, discussion items, then we close the logging and go on to general rambling :) Lethe Naumova: rabblerabblerabble Tateru Nino: First of all, welcome to the new volunteers and those who have not been to one of these meetings before. Tateru Nino: Glad to have you :) Tateru Nino: This week we have 33 new volunteers, bringing us to 707. Tateru Nino: *ahem* Tateru Nino: I'll read that again. Martin Mounier: wow, 707 Lethe Naumova: Which is also a kind of airplane. wildfire Perkins: woooooo hoooo wildfire Perkins: WooT Tateru Nino: 33 new MENTORS bringing us to 707. wildfire Perkins: WooT Coal Nelson: It's a big airplane, and a big number! Tateru Nino: No new greeters, remaining at 129. Tateru Nino: 5 new Live Helpers (the first new ones this year, I believe) bringing us to 164. Shoshana Epsilon: Woot! Tateru Nino: And 93 instructors bringing us up to 521. Tateru Nino: That's a LOT of instructors, if you ask me :) Shoshana Epsilon: Wow wildfire Perkins: yep for sure\ Zennon Poppy: ya Tateru Nino: As for new residents, yesterday we got 1165, the day before 1389 and the day before that 1600. Lethe Naumova: Teazers. Ginny Gremlin: yikes! Frank Foley: wow Ginny Gremlin: that’s a lot of new Zennon Poppy: wow Shoshana Epsilon: Jeez! Lethe Naumova: There's been press. Tateru Nino: One quarter of all of those went to Help Island. The rest went to the Ahern WA and Waterhead WA. Frank Foley: how does that compare to the past? Tateru Nino: That's 2.5 times the average. Shoshana Epsilon: (I think I met most of those) Tateru Nino: Recent averages were 650/day Tateru Nino: Now some bad news. Tateru Nino: The script that resets people's homes when they leave Help Island is broken again. That means they can come back, and a few are. Tateru Nino: It broke sometime yesterday, and has been reported. Ginny Gremlin considers jumping off a bridge Lethe Naumova hides her bridges. Shoshana Epsilon: Does that mean that current residents can come back, too? Tateru Nino: No, only ones who leave the island while it's broken. Tateru Nino: And who don't manually set their homes somewhere else. Tateru Nino: Second...if Help Island restarts a liaison should be told IMMEDIATELY. A sim-side update didn't work out as planned on Friday morning. Let me say the next bit slowly. Tateru Nino: If Help Island crashes or restarts, and a liaison does not manually attend to it, no new resident can log into SL, anywhere AT ALL, until a liaison /does/ manually attend to it. Tateru Nino: That should be sorted by Tuesday or Wednesday. Bit of a pest. Shoshana Epsilon: Wow. Lethe Naumova: Wait, including the OIs? Tateru Nino: Anywhere. Lethe Naumova: How is that possible? Tateru Nino: They can log on the SECOND time, but not the FIRST login. Coal Nelson: And there's over a thousand trying to log on every day. Tateru Nino: Apparently it has "something to do with the way the agent record in the database is created" Lethe Naumova: that's a screwy bug, it must be driving LL up the wall. wildfire Perkins: i bet Tateru Nino: So this only impacts a resident's first login, and there's a manual workaround. I'm told all the liaisons know what to do. Bam Camus: I missed what to do Tateru Nino: I've got a crash logger on the island, but I'm not awake all the time. Tateru Nino: If HI crashes or restarts, let a liaison know as soon as possible. Tateru Nino squints sleepily at the agenda. Ginny Gremlin: you mean alarm bells don't ring at LL if it does? wildfire Perkins: if they answer lol' Tateru Nino: There's a grid monkey watching...but it's possible it might be missed. Martin Mounier: good question Ginny Shoshana Epsilon: I typically get a good response saying "Hi. I'm a Mentor and HELP ISLAND is <fill in the blank> I need a LINDEN IMMEDIATELY. Tateru Nino: They are very responsive to our needs there, as long as we don't panic. Tateru Nino: Now I don't know how many people that Jeska's monthly mentor meeting didn't happen again this month. She was down with Bronchitis for two weeks. She's still not well, but back at work and way behind. Martin Mounier: Tateru, what "comm channel" shall we use? SL Mentor Group? Martin Mounier: or Live Help? Tateru Nino: If I'm reporting problems at HI, I'd go for Live Help unless I know I've got a receptive liaison already on tap. Tateru Nino: The liaisons are listening and live-helpers will bat for you. Lethe Naumova: I wouldn't suggest the mentor channel, thar be dragons. Tateru Nino: *tsk* 'there are', not 'thar be', dearie :) wildfire Perkins: yeah spam heaven Lethe Naumova: methinks thou doth protest overly much Lethe Naumova: (aimed at Tat. Lethe Naumova: ) Tateru Nino: The Help Island staffroom has been updated. If you want a spiffy new mentor tee-shirt, or the latest help island communicator, or the latest list of what languages other than English we all speak, that's the place to go. wildfire Perkins: kewl Lethe Naumova: I assume that since they went through the effort to put their name on the list, they'll actually listen if you IM them? Tateru Nino: If you don't know where that is, it's 80m above the Help Island sandbox. Any HI regular volunteer can show you where. Tateru Nino: Well, not everyone listed themselves. But we hope so, barring RL and other commitments. Tateru Nino: Now...discussion item. It's been mentioned that there is a certain 'inconstancy' in builds on HI. Tateru Nino: That's the diplomatic version. Basically there are builds that people feel are out of place. Tateru Nino: Who wants to say something about it? Angelique LaFollette: Can you be more Specific? Ginny Gremlin: I agree Lethe Naumova: I'm nearly finished with my build, so I'm open to taking it down if it's an issue. Ginny Gremlin: I thought the arrangement was one build at a time Ginny Gremlin: and the mentor agreed upon Tateru Nino: For that place, yes. And there have been no objections about what is there that I have heard. Tateru Nino: So you're okay there, Lethe. wildfire Perkins: looks fine to me Michael Fairplay: Tateru may I make a suggestion? Lethe Naumova: I'll give some other poor building obsessed fool a swing at it soon, regardless. =) Frank Foley: so what build are you talking about then Tateru? Ginny Gremlin: Lethe's build was an agreed upon item Tateru Nino: Go for it, Michael. wildfire Perkins: only one problem I’ve seen Shoshana Epsilon *raises hand* Tateru Nino: You're next, Wildfire. Tateru Nino: Then Sho. Michael Fairplay: I think if someone plans on leaving something on the island for more than a couple of hours it should have to be approved through you Tateru Nino: Sweet of you, but I have no authority to approve or deny anyone anything. We get to build there as a privilege, so long as we don't abuse it. Tateru Nino: Wildfire? wildfire Perkins: about the signs in the exit hut being backwards wildfire Perkins: Adam never did take care of that Tateru Nino: I can ask someone to take another look at that tonight. Tateru Nino: Sho? wildfire Perkins: good its been weeks Shoshana Epsilon: Thank you, Tat. There is a small "stadium" in the sandbox, that should probably be removed to give the new residents space to built. I like the racetrack over the water. Lethe Naumova raises her hand, depending on what sho says =) Tateru Nino: Marv's. It is a bit obstructive. Tateru Nino: Lethe? Martin Mounier: test Shoshana Epsilon: (we can hear you, Martin) Tateru Nino: :) Lethe Naumova: Okay, mouthful time. When I first joined up, there was a relatively small, dedicated group of volunteers that staffed help island. We kinda built the whole thing organically, and it seems to have worked out fairly well. Tateru Nino nods. Shoshana Epsilon *raises hand* Lethe Naumova: I think times have changed though, there are far too many help island active mentors (good thing) to continue planning HI builds on the fly. Toy LaFollette raises hand :) Lethe Naumova: I don't think routing that kind of thing through one person is the answer, but I don't think we can just randomly build on the island anymore, no mater how handy we think our build might be. Tateru Nino: Sho? Then Toy. Shoshana Epsilon: Sorry about that. Tat, can the roof to the greeter hub be raised? Some newbies have a hard time getting in there. Me too, some days. Lethe Naumova has flashbacks to Waterhead. Ginny Gremlin: yes Ginny Gremlin: very low wildfire Perkins: lol Frank Foley: yep I’d 2nd that Tateru Nino: We can ask. Getting the content team in to work on bits has not been without it's troubles. Toy LaFollette: waterhead =banghead :) Shoshana Epsilon grins Tateru Nino: Toy? Toy LaFollette: okay.... back to the comments about building..... Toy LaFollette: I think if someone wants to add to HI they should go through channels.... lets not forget, HI is for the new rezzies, not our playground or private sandbox :) Bam Camus: agrees Ginny Gremlin: Agrees Toy LaFollette: that’s all :) Angelique LaFollette: ~Nods~ Lethe Naumova: I've been a bit guilty of that, I'll say for the logs that if anyone has an issue with any of my builds, come talk to me. Tateru Nino: Technically the original channel was: LL was going to handle 100% of the HI build themselves. When that was delayed I sort of built around them. Tateru Nino: And it worked. Martin Mounier: *raises hand* Tateru Nino: And they let us continue to do that...but that privilege could go away any time, if we overstep. Tateru Nino: But there are no 'channels' per se right now. Tateru Nino: Yes, Martin? Martin Mounier: I was told that the concept of HI has changed. It has been a playground to Volunteers. Is that SIM totally gone? Wasn’t it possible to bring it back? It would help us and keep HI "cleen" Martin Mounier: clean even Toy LaFollette: HI is still in the trial stage and Id hate to see it go away for something we all can prevent... as far as channels, until we know otherwise I think if someone wanyts to build on HI they should ask Jeska Tateru Nino: Technically, yes. HI is Jeska's baby. My nannying it is rather separate. (HI)Ginny Gremlin: imagining 707 mentors all free building on HI Toy LaFollette: :) Michael Fairplay raises hand Tateru Nino: Michael? Tateru Nino: Then Lethe, I think. Lethe Naumova: Ideally. Though it would be nice to keep stuff off of her plate. I think at the minimum though, we should talk to other mentors and get different opinions on the pros and cons. Michael Fairplay: What if instead of the race track in the sky we boxed off part of Hi and make it flat to help newbies learn to control vehicles the race tracks seems a bit primmy to me Lethe Naumova: It would be nice to have any dedicated "driving" area in a section of the island with autoreturn. Tateru Nino: The rest of the island doesn't have a lot of room. Up in the sky is just about our only option. Tateru Nino: Or over part of the water. Lethe Naumova: Clearly the solution is more sims Lethe Naumova looks shifty Toy LaFollette: HI should be a place for new rezzies to learn the basics, not a mini-mainland Lethe Naumova: I agree with that. Tateru Nino: Personally speaking... Shoshana Epsilon: If we make it too exciting, they won't want to leave. Tateru Nino: I am in favour of trying out new things. I guess you've spotted that :) Toy LaFollette: we do to much and hell, they will never leave it hehehe Tateru Nino: I like things that are simple, practical, not too confusing but still artistic and/or inspiring. Tateru Nino: Not too confusing but still things that spark questions. Ginny Gremlin: hand up Lethe Naumova also raises her hand Angelique LaFollette: I agree with trying new things, But they should all have the Focus of getting the New people Functional, and OFF HI as soon as feasible. Tateru Nino: Gin? Then Lethe. Angelique LaFollette: Drivers Ed doesn't really fit that Profile. Ginny Gremlin: the main purpose of HI is to indoctrinate new people into the SL way of life Shoshana Epsilon *raises hand* Ginny Gremlin: they need to know the basics thoroughly Ginny Gremlin: and that should be the focus Tateru Nino: Lethe after Gin, then Sho. Tateru Nino: Done, Ginny? Ginny Gremlin: At a rate of 200 even new people a day Ginny Gremlin: on HI Ginny Gremlin: if they stay too long Ginny Gremlin: we'll be overrun Ginny Gremlin: we need intensive Ginny Gremlin: and quick help Angelique LaFollette: I agree, Get them trained up, and on the Main Map Quickly, And efficiently. Tateru Nino nods. At about 400/day you have about 15 minutes per person before you have to move them on. Otherwise the sim just plain fills up. Tateru Nino: Lethe? Lethe Naumova pastes what she was writing before, sorry if it doesn't quite line up completely with where Ginny went. Lethe Naumova: I see the primary purpose of Help Island as twofold. 1) Provide a calm, supervised area for new citizens to learn the basics, like Ginny said. 2) An advert of sorts for what's possible in SL. Lethe Naumova: I think we're getting more into 2, because /we/ already know the basics, and we like cool stuff. I don't think that's the direction we should be going. Martin Mounier: Lethe, agree Lethe Naumova: We're trying to substitute prims for our efforts talking to newbies. Prims don't teach half as well as a good mentor or greeter. |

Lethe Naumova grins "And I'll be the first to admit that I'm a primary offender there."
Tateru Nino: If prims and scripts did, we'd just upgrade the OI's and forget HI. Tateru Nino: Done, Lethe? Nick Shatner raises a hand Lethe Naumova: Le done. Tateru Nino: Sho, then Nick. Shoshana Epsilon: One problem that I think that Marv was trying to address is that people have been crashing into each other (or into pedestrians) because there is no place to drive safely. Can we get them to remove the car? (And the fire, for that matter) ....Also ... Frank Foley raises hand Toy LaFollette raises hand one last time Shoshana Epsilon: Can we get tutorials for taking things out of a box, etc? Lethe Naumova: There was one at one point, not sure where it got to. Tateru Nino can easily make another. I've got notecards. Shoshana Epsilon: If we are going to increase the numbers of people on HI, we need to have more tutorials. Angelique LaFollette: That makes more sense than a race Track. wildfire Perkins: i agree Tateru Nino: If you feel a freebie item is a problem, you SHOULD email Jeska about it. jeska@lindenlab.com Shoshana Epsilon: ok Lethe Naumova: I think a good summery of how I feel is that we're adding stuff for stuff's sake at this point. Tateru Nino: Side note, I've got info stations on gestures coming and inventory after that. Tateru Nino: Nick? Nick Shatner: I think HI should have its emphasis towards being more a "This is what SL is all about, but there's so much more to explore on the mainland" Angelique LaFollette: How about a slideshow tour of different SL Environments? Nick Shatner: might help shift some of the people, I think I saw someone still hanging around that's been there since I was made a mentor Tateru Nino: Some people stay awhile. I saw one last night who has been trying to debug her machine problems for 3 months or so. She logs in periodically to see if the latest tweak has fixed it. Lethe Naumova raises an eyebrow. Tateru Nino: But of course we can't really afford people to pile up too long. If folks are there much longer than two weeks, or we get too busy, IM a liaison to move them along. Tateru Nino: Teeple, Nicole, Tesla, Adam or Coffee are generally your best bets. Toy LaFollette thinks a good linden name would be Boots Linden :) Moon Adamant: :D Ginny Gremlin: hahaha Frank Foley: heheh Lethe Naumova has an side note, when there's time Nick Shatner: heh wildfire Perkins: :0) toy Lethe Naumova: er, a side note Tateru Nino: I'll inject a side-note on HI staffing, too. Our ideal numbers are about 1 volunteer for 6 new people, with no more than about 7 volunteers. Tateru Nino: Even at that ratio the workload can go from insane to dead. Tateru Nino: Yes, Lethe? Lethe Naumova: Unrealistic feature request idea: Landmarks that don't work until you're off help island, in the same manner that the map doesn't work. Michael Fairplay: great idea Lethe Naumova: It would mean you could put a real landmark dispenser on HI, instead of having to pass them out by hand. Tateru Nino: Indeed. Landmarks and the Map work just fine, of course. Angelique LaFollette: it sounds good. Lethe Naumova hands over a landmar....DONT PRESS TELEPORT Tateru Nino: Aye. Tateru Nino: As Tom Baker said "Failure is one of the basic freedoms." A downside of our open system is that it's basic freedom is unforgiving to new people. Shoshana Epsilon: The problem is, that just like their home is set to their next location (and therefore ours is, too), it would probably mean that tps wouldn't work for us, either. Angelique LaFollette: Perhaps if we tell the new person, "I'm giving you a landmark, Don't press Teleport when you receive it." Angelique LaFollette: THEN give it to them. Tateru Nino: I know I try that....but the blue teleport button....sooooo tempting! Moon Adamant: lol Lethe Naumova: plus the UI for landmarks is terrible Angelique LaFollette: The pretty Candy like Button, Nick Shatner: or put landmarks in a notecard, saying not to teleport until they're ready wildfire Perkins: how true that is Lethe Naumova: I actually had one more majorish issue Tateru Nino: Okay. Go for it. Lethe Naumova: the mentor numbers you were talking about reminded me of it, or I would have said earlier =) Lethe Naumova: I remember Blueman standing up at one of the first of these meetings and pointing out that volunteers were bunching up too much. Well, I see that becoming an issue again. Tateru Nino: At the greeter hub you mean? (HI)Toy LaFollette: nods Lethe Naumova: The greeter hub is the new sandbox Toy LaFollette nods Tateru Nino sighs. Yes. I've seen some of that. Lethe Naumova: (the sandbox being where we used to bunch up) Lethe Naumova: Far too often, people who aren't at the hub are off building something or other somewhere on the island. Tateru Nino: I'd like to repeat some advice from our first or second meeting, which was a request relayed from Jeska. Not to bunch all in one place on the island, and not to try to do orientations and welcomes in the greeter hub. Tateru Nino: The greeter hub can become impossibly confusing with new folks popping in quite regularly. Tateru Nino: Any more, Lethe? Anyone else want to speak? Indicate. Michael Fairplay raises hand Shoshana Epsilon *raises hand* Lethe Naumova: I'm done, thanks Tateru Nino: Michael, then Sho. Michael Fairplay: Just to let every one know changed the format slightly of the languages card to include greeters too it can be found in the classroom Michael Fairplay: I'm done :0( Shoshana Epsilon: Can you remind us (me) how we are supposed to get in touch with the greeters? Is there a solution being planned for the broken greeter boxes? Tateru Nino: At the moment, try hollering on the Mentor group IM, or keeping some calling cards for greeters in your pocket. Unless something better comes along. Nick Shatner: They only seem broken as far as contacting goes Nick Shatner: new people can still choose who, and you can IM the greeter for them Tateru Nino: Actually, they also list people who are unavailable or offline. Ginny Gremlin: yes, I did that yesterday Michael Fairplay is also a greeter Tateru Nino: But the names there are a good guide. Tateru Nino: Oh, before I forget...if you speak a language other than English well enough to work in it, and are not already on Michael's card, IM him with the details. Toy LaFollette: I got a short ~hmmm~ few words to say :) Tateru Nino: If you don't have the card, pop by the Help Island staffroom and get one. Tateru Nino: Toy? Go. Toy LaFollette: first off, we are all equals as volunteers, the only difference being is experience... we don’t compete :0 I know that many of us hesitate to ask for help ourselves, however.... Toy LaFollette: I know no one that has the experience that isn’t willing to share... ask the older ones for advice if you feel the need :) Toy LaFollette: that’s all :) Tateru Nino: To back Toy up. We're all here to help each-other. I am at your service anytime. Alex Fitzsimmons: ? wildfire Perkins: yep me too Ginny Gremlin: hand up Tateru Nino: Gin? Ginny Gremlin: I already mentioned this to you Tat Ginny Gremlin: but someone I know witnessed a mentor Tateru Nino: (We'll close the log after this topic, but feel free to keep chatting after) Ginny Gremlin: give a new person a lot of misinformation Angelique LaFollette: Oh? Ginny Gremlin: should the new mentors not get a folder on the basics?" Tateru Nino: Well, I try to get them one, Gin...but I don't know who they all are :/ Ginny Gremlin: maybe Jeska could give a list and we can send them one? Tateru Nino jots another thing on her list of things to ask Jeska for. Tateru Nino: Actually, just a post with the names of our new volunteers on the forums each week might be worth it. Tateru Nino: Yes? Michael Fairplay: I think that would suffice and I’ll gladly give my newbie pack to anyone that needs it Tateru Nino nods. Shoshana Epsilon: lol Tateru Nino: Anyone else want to speak? Tateru Nino: Alright then. Thanks for coming, dear ones. Feel free to stay and chat, or head back to helping, RL or whatever :) Formatted and colorized with transcript. |
