Tateru Nino - Part 1 of 2
You: Hello everyone and thanks for coming out today. It's an awkward time for volunteers, so not a huge turnout. You: Normal rules apply today. We have an agenda. Information items first, then discussion points, then random discussion (not logged). Respect each-other's right to speak. Tat is the chair, and if she tells you to pipe down or hush, please do so. You: That way we all get a chance to speak. Sky McGann: I'll just watch this time since it's my first time here. Lethe Naumova: pfffft Sky McGann is really excited too. syndy Pinkney: mine as well :) Lethe Naumova: you two better provide insightful comments or so help me... *shakes fist* You: It's been an interesting sort of week this week. We have another 25 new mentors. Welcome to the new ones, no new greeters, no new live helpers (though we lost one this week). I don't have information this week on the number of new instructors. Lethe Naumova: Who'd we lose in LH? You: aEoLuS Waves Lethe Naumova: Ah. You: That puts us at 678 mentors, 130 greeters, 159 LH, and 430 instructors. Mera Pixel: or roughly 67, 13, 15, and 43? :D kai Sachertorte: LOL You: Or less :/ Lethe Naumova: 67 is pretty generous You: I'd also like make special mention of Shoshana Epsilon, and Snark Serpentine - though new and neither are here, they've done good work and we've noticed that. Mera Pixel: Snark rules. kai Sachertorte: nice! Ginny Gremlin: and they are very active too Tateru Nino rummages through the agenda. Next up, Help Island. Of course :) Sky McGann: SHo told me she was going to HI. There's a low turn there today. You: Help Island went offline when 1.9 rolled out due to a miscommunication in LL. A key bug fix prevented new residents from getting there except by walking or flying from the two connected OIs (10 and 11). kai Sachertorte: I have been too busy off HI to get there lately You: It was down for two weeks, and then brought up after the rolling update this Wednesday afternoon., Charisma Heart: yay for that update kai Sachertorte: kewl You: Wednesday evening, the signs that allow newbies to get to HI were accidentally returned, and the only ones who could get there .... err... had to walk or fly from OI10 or 11. kai Sachertorte: oooo Charisma Heart: eep Ginny Gremlin: lol You: This was noticed and reported Friday morning, but not actually fixed until Friday afternoon, due to an unusual email delay. You: But newbies can get to Help Island now, and as some of you have noticed it's starting to get busier there, with about 25% of new residents choosing HI, and 75% choosing the Ahern Welcome area. Lethe Naumova: silly newbies kai Sachertorte: LOL Mera Pixel: Ahern is for kids You: Newbies who use the signs on HI to transfer to the mainland will arrive in Waterhead, at present. Lethe Naumova: once Waterhead cools down, I like that arrangement myself You: Questions? Charisma Heart: newp Ginny Gremlin: there was still a few of the predators around last night kai Sachertorte: predators? Charisma Heart: Predators? Ginny Gremlin: the ones who love to make a newbies life miserable Lethe Naumova: I'll try to drop by there every so often and knock heads until it gets better. You: Either griefers or scammers. Charisma Heart: oh joy Mera Pixel makes not to follow Lethe around to watch the action. Mera Pixel: *note kai Sachertorte: mmm sorry haven't been to any of the usual newbie places... too busy helping them elsewhere Lethe Naumova: we do what we can, where we can kai Sachertorte: Mera, can you take a cam and record? Lethe Naumova: :o You: We've had better griefer coverage at the mainland entry points for the last two weeks than we've had volunteer coverage. Help Island likewise almost immediately started to become deserted of volunteer help due to the low rate of newbie arrival Thursday You: and Friday./ You: FYI, basically. kai Sachertorte: mmm ok, I'll try to better my life :D Lethe Naumova: I tried to stay there, but eventually even /I/ got bored kai Sachertorte: LOL Tateru Nino boggles at the very thought. Lethe Naumova: and that's something, I have lots to do there even when there's no newbies. (like turning the island mini map totally light blue) Mera Pixel: not enough boggling these days kai Sachertorte: LMAO Lethe Lethe Naumova: <.< You: That's been very successful, btw :) Lethe Naumova: I know, it means I can't use the mini map anymore =( kai Sachertorte: awwwww You: Now, something I was beginning to think I'd not have the opportunity to say...the Greeter selector system on Help Island, and the Greeter HUDs are /working/, for differing values of working. Ginny Gremlin awed at Lethe Ginny Gremlin: tinkering powers Charisma Heart: lol Lethe Naumova: and theres two of them! Double the almost working! You: If you don't have a greeter HUD marked DB1 or DB2, contact Jeska. The text profile and pictures aren't working (anecdotal evidence), but residents can select a greeter in world at the Help Island greeter hub. You: And we should encourage them to do so. You: Speaking of Lethe.... kai Sachertorte: I'm not a greeter, do i need a HUD? Lethe Naumova: oh dear You: Only greeters need greeter huds. kai Sachertorte: k :P You: If you work help island in any capacity, you probably want a help island communicator HUD. You: Back to Lethe :) kai Sachertorte: ooo how can I get one of those then? Lethe Naumova ducks You: (I'll give you one in a minute) You: Just south of the northwest pier, we've allocated a spot for big, prim-heavy volunteer builds. Either completed works or works-in-progress. Charisma Heart: ohh Charisma Heart: neato You: Right now that spot is allocated to Lethe. You: She'll do her thing there for a few weeks, then someone else can have the spot. kai Sachertorte: LOL Lethe Naumova: and I'm abusing it for all it's worth! My build's up to around 1000 prims now =D Charisma Heart: lol Charisma Heart: woot Ginny Gremlin: excellent build too = I took a tour You: We'll keep rotating builds through and start to get an idea of what sort of thing really captures the attention and imagination of the new folks. kai Sachertorte: great You: Particularly popular builds, I hope, we can find a longer-term home for. Sky McGann: That would be nice. Lethe Naumova: Right now I'm taking a break from that to improve access to the different areas of the island, especially the mentor built areas. (stairs, walkways, things like that) I could always use suggestions on that stuff. You: Volunteer builds should be free of advertising for any business. We've had troubles with that already. Just so you all know. You: And that's the end of the notices. Does anyone have a topic they would like to bring up for discussion today? Ginny Gremlin: Ginny ;puts up her hand You: Gin? Go. Ginny Gremlin: The last two weeks have been horrendous in the Waterhead Ginny Gremlin: and I was wondering if it is possible to designate a few of mentors Ginny Gremlin: more powers to control the griefers and trollers Ginny Gremlin: as it is we are powerless and they know it You: Tough call. LL has, to-date skirted around the issue of giving non-staff the powers to deal with other residents on land that is not their own. kai Sachertorte: have the lindens reacted fast enough? Charisma Heart raises my hand Ginny Gremlin: it is difficult, especially when no Linden arrives You: And honestly, a lot of them know that many of the volunteers can't be bothered filing abuse reports. Sky McGann: I'd say give them a taste of their own medicine but then it would be no better. Two wrongs and all.... You: Liaisons can be awfully busy, though they are more responsive to problems on Help Island. You: Charisma? Charisma Heart: would it be possible/feasible to request Linden assignment of one linden to the welcome area, to head off that issue Ginny Gremlin: just even the power to send them elsewhere kai Sachertorte: I was thinking the same thing Char Lethe Naumova: It's been done in the past, Charisma, my understanding is that it didn't work well. You: We could ask. Anyone know what that might cost? Tateru Nino works it out. Lethe Naumova: I've heard from several places that at points in time there have been liasons at the WA 24/7 You: Cost for a liaison to camp the WA 24x7 is approximately $2000USD/week. Ginny Gremlin: one case in point is a griefer who bombed Waterhead 3 times and nothing ever happened to him Charisma Heart: If not a Full Fledged Linden, then a Liaison at least, as the SL Welcome Area is the Gateway to the whole community, it would seem, to me at any rate, that to protect their product, that they would want a balanced and fair space for new residents Sammmy Stewart: set the sim with the new island permission send an av home Lethe Naumova: Liaisons are full fledged lindens =) Charisma Heart jots note to self You: Anyone want to guess where the money for that comes from? Ginny Gremlin: frm the accounts saved Sammmy Stewart: the sim permissions can be set same as an island Charisma Heart: it should be a cost they underwrite as a way of protecting product, and PR Lethe Naumova mumbles about 11million dollars, but realizes it could be better spent elsewhere Ginny Gremlin: there must be a lot quit when they experience such a place as Waterhead or WA You: Concur. For example: (via Lethe Naumova) funding Lethe's RL education. kai Sachertorte: :D Charisma Heart: as I said, it was just a thought, but it just seems, to me, to make sense Mera Pixel boggles at the thought of a more educated Lethe. Sammmy Stewart: raises hand kai Sachertorte: I'm with you Charisma kai Sachertorte: a note would be a good idea i think You: I believe that the new estate tools allow some delegation, but it is still against the TOS/CS (as they are currently written) for us to take action other than abuse reports against residents, even if the tools were given to us. You: Sammy? Sammmy Stewart: ok i own island Sammmy Stewart: and 1.9 there is a new feature Sammmy Stewart: it is send one av home Sammmy Stewart: it can be set to more then one person now Sammmy Stewart: they can set it to work for a group Sammmy Stewart: new with 1.9 Lethe Naumova: On help island, home is set on the island, so the tools as they are now wouldn’t help there. Lethe Naumova: Same with Ahern and Waterhead. Mera Pixel: The problem becomes when a griefer, or a volunteer in a bad move decides to abuse the power, with virtually no accountability. You: That's true. When they arrive, that's their home. kai Sachertorte contemplates what to do then You: And there's an issue. Accountability. We might be delegated the tools, but LL are accountable for what we might do with them, right or wrong. You: When a liaison acts on a disruptive resident, they fill out a mile of paperwork. Lethe Naumova: I think it would be nice, if we were all informed of the results of our ARs, but it's not really philosophically or physically practical. I think we have a habit of feeling useless, because most action is taken out of sight. Lethe Naumova: And I'm guilty of flagrant abuse of commas. kai Sachertorte: LOL You: Comma abuse - the silent killer. Sky McGann: Could we come up with a notecard telling the person that their name has been recorded and if they continue a full AR will be filed, leading to banning? Mera Pixel goes back to agreeing on the education issue. Charisma Heart: Good Idea Sky Lethe Naumova: I find that telling it to them in chat is more intimidating You: I'd jump straight to the AR, myself, Sky. A lot of these people get away with what they do for so long because people don't AR them. Sky McGann: Yes but they can close the IIM or TP out. Mera Pixel: Why warn? Just AR and *then* tell them. :) Sky McGann: Same is true with the notecard, but....... Lethe Naumova: I give one warning, if I don't know the abuser. You: They disrupt 20 residents, but only one person files an AR, so it looks more minor. Lethe Naumova: Especially with things like nudity, where the chance for accidental abuse is so high You: Yes. You: A warning /is/ (personal opinion) appropriate. Sky McGann: Yes, but my issue is that there are some who may not know. Giving them a note telling them they should sustain from that activity may work as a warning. Lethe Naumova: It's also a lot more effective to /pre-empt/ abuse. At Waterhead I discourage even having a gun in your hand, because the next step is shooting, which is harder to stop. Lethe Naumova: Likewise with the no push script rule on HI You: Indeed. Once someone shoots at someone else, or even accidentally, someone gets the urge to shoot back. Charisma Heart: But Sky, then between all the new mentors/greeters, its hard to know who has already recieved the note and continues to abuse, and those who didn’t get the note at all syndy Pinkney: i only a week into this - but i was wondering if there was a premade note card with do's and donts? something simple? Lethe Naumova: Do: Help. Don't: be a jerk wad. syndy Pinkney: lol Sky McGann: Right. It's difficult for sure. Mera Pixel: hehe, nearly my exact words I was about to type Lethe Naumova: It's more specific on HI, but otherwise that's about all there is to it. syndy Pinkney accepted your inventory offer. syndy Pinkney: i meant to the people that don’t know they shouldn’t shoot people Lethe Naumova: f1 > community standards You: Those are the official WA guidelines posted previously at Ahern by LL. Lethe Naumova: oh, that card /is/ handy Charisma Heart: Tateru, can I have that as well? You: I do not believe they are posted right now. Lethe Naumova: they took down the Ahern sign for now, it was on the fountain Lethe Naumova: I do know Brian isn't done with Ahern Ginny Gremlin: what should we do if we see a fellow mentor/helper/greeter acting inappropriately? |

Tateru Nino - Part 2 of 2
Lethe Naumova: AR, then IM a liaison. You: Right now the only available method is to AR. Lethe Naumova: well, warn/ar/ liaison Lethe Naumova: I give mentors the benefit of the doubt once =) kai Sachertorte: :D Ginny Gremlin: do we contact them in IM and warn? You: This does not mean that they will be instantly trodden on. Particularly if it's a grey area, it will be bounced up to someone who is able to make a call. Sky McGann: and only if they're wearing their tag. Mera Pixel: or remind them to take off the mentor tag if they're off the job? You: If it's a grey area and the ruling is against, they'll get a warning precisely because it's not clear. Lethe Naumova: It's polite to keep issues you have with a volunteer off of an open channel, especially with newbies around Lethe Naumova: at least that's my opinion You: Sometimes an AR is our way of saying "I don't know. Please, can someone at LL make a judgement call?" You: Concur. I absolutely will not condone arguing or bickering in front of the other residents. They do not deserve that. Ginny Gremlin: I gave this particular person an IM an warning, because they were shooting a gun in the WA, and now they won't talk to me Ginny Gremlin: sorry Waterhead kai Sachertorte: mmm that's sad for them Ginny You: They're missing out. kai Sachertorte: indeed! Sky McGann: They will come around. They may just be embarrassed because you were right. Charisma Heart: I think its acceptable to believe we all know how the Welcome Area and New Residents should be treated, and what type of conduct may not be Sim Appropriate, its almost, (gasp) common sense Ginny Gremlin: I feel like the hall monitor at school You: Oh, two small reminders, while I think of them. Lethe Naumova: You can't count on common sense here, alas Sky McGann: lol Mera Pixel: why is common sense always so uncommon? syndy Pinkney: hehehe You: LL trademark and copyright policy notecard for anyone that wants a copy, and doesn't have one. Lethe Naumova: common sense is common. Your common sense is a unique and beautiful snowflake. Charisma Heart giggles Lethe Naumova: And SL is a blowtorch =) kai Sachertorte: LOL You: Also, if you have not already done so, go into the announcements, known issues, and volunteers forums, go to the forum tools option and select SUBSCRIBE TO THIS FORUM. You'll get a daily email listing new and updated threads. You: There aren't many and it will keep you up with all the news. You: And save you from the drama of the more rambunctious forums. Sky McGann: Ooh I can do that now! Couldn't before. hahahah Lethe Naumova: quick, end the log so I can say terrible things about the forums! You: Pff :) You: Any other topics people would like to bring up today? kai Sachertorte: just a question kai Sachertorte: a friend joined the Mentors recently, got the invite to group, then crashed kai Sachertorte: so he's not in the group kai Sachertorte: I suggested IMing Jeska kai Sachertorte: is that the only way to get in? Lethe Naumova: IM Jeska, she'll fix it up. Eventually. Lethe Naumova nods kai Sachertorte: LOL kai Sachertorte: she must be swamped in IMs You: If the internal record has been updated on them (and it should have been) any liaison who is also a mentor officer can probably fix it. Lethe Naumova: and emails. And formum posts. And forum PMs. You: Best way to get a hold of Jeska is jeska@lindenlab.com You: And don't forget to mention your SL name :) Sky McGann: Send her a notecard. Easier than IM and she can refer back to it. Sky McGann is notecard happy ....lol Lethe Naumova: oooh, I can't decide if that's a wonderful or terrible idea. I'll have to try it...several times. Charisma Heart: lol Sky McGann: Hahaha You: Anyone got anything else? Mera Pixel: notecards you can't mark as read. I'm in notecard overload and mine are simply random things Lethe Naumova: What's this I hear about all volunteers getting paid again? Ginny Gremlin: paid? Mera Pixel: hehe I'm not biting...I'm on to ya Charisma Heart: lol Charisma Heart: yeah Tateru Nino puts a mark in the log for random conversation ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Official part over now. Formatted and colorized with transcript. |
